Twitter Reacts to Jordan Spieth Winning 2017 British Open Ahead of Matt Kuchar
Jordan Spieth started Sunday's 2017 British Open action with a three-shot lead and overcame some major struggles to hold off Matt Kuchar, winning his third major by three shots.
After three bogeys on the first four holes and an awful tee shot on the 13th, the American found his rhythm. He somehow finished the day one under.
HBO's Bill Simmons was impressed:

Spieth started the day with a three-shot lead over Kuchar, a crowd favourite, and six strokes over the rest of the pack. Not surprisingly, fans and pundits alike hoped the 23-year-old would falter out of the gate.
CBS' Kyle Porter had a suggestion for his playing partner:
And those hoping for an exciting final round got exactly that early. Spieth bogeyed three of the first four holes, letting his main rivals right back into the race.
ESPN.com's Jason Sobel noted the 2015 Masters winner was scuffling―and human:
Spieth recovered and regained the lead, but another bogey on the ninth gave Kuchar a share of the lead with nine holes left to play. The Skratch Twitter account couldn't help itself:
Kuchar appeared to be on the front foot through the early part of the back nine, with two good looks at birdie putts, while Spieth had to make a great recovery on the 11th to salvage par. The 13th is where things really went wrong for Spieth, per Porter:
It took help from the fans to find the ball on that tee shot, with Spieth opting to declare an unplayable lie and take a drop. Here's a look at where his ball ended up:
He ended up playing from the practice range and somehow limited the damage to a bogey with a fantastic seven-foot putt. The unlikely bogey powered an excellent run to end the back nine, with three birdies and an eagle, that propelled him to victory. Golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods were impressed:
The youngster now holds three legs of the career Slam, needing only the PGA Championship to complete the set.
ESPN Stats & Info shared some of the numbers behind his first three major wins, comparing them to those of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy:
While Spieth's dominance during the first three rounds was impressive, it was dwarfed by the way he recovered from the disastrous tee shot at the 13th. Gary Lineker, a former England international footballer, rightly praised the Texan for his incredible composure, and ESPN's Mike Greenberg was in awe:
Porter also noted his opponent showed a touch of class after the final putt:
Spieth has already finished on the podium at the PGA Championship, taking second place in 2015, and there's little doubt he'll win the tournament at some point in the future.
Given the inconsistent form of McIlroy and Dustin Johnson's struggles in majors this year, it could come as early as next month, as Spieth will be among the favourites at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
