Texas' Reese Leitao Suspended 2 Games After Reaching Plea Deal on Drug Charges
Texas Longhorns tight end Reese Leitao will reportedly serve a two-game suspension after reaching a plea deal on drug charges stemming from a February arrest.
Nick Bromberg of Yahoo Sports said Texas head coach Tom Herman notified reporters of Leitao's suspension Tuesday. Bromberg previously reported the 2017 signee was allowed to join the Longhorns after his plea deal "cut the drug charges he was facing to misdemeanors."
Leitao, who was a 3-star tight end in the class of 2017, per Scout, allegedly tried to sell Xanax at his high school, per Bromberg.
"We've reviewed and discussed at length the circumstances surrounding our football signee Reese Leitao," Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said in a statement, per Bromberg's May 30 report. "After considerable reflection, I have decided to allow him to be a part of our program. Based on several discussions with people who know Reese well as a person both on and off the field, he's been a good student, highly-regarded teammate and leader among his peers."
The Longhorns will start the season with two winnable games during Leitao's suspension. They face the Big Ten's Maryland, which is coming off a 6-7 campaign, and the Mountain West's San Jose State, which is coming off a 4-8 effort.
Leitao will be eligible to return for Texas' showdown against USC in Week 3.
If he lives up to his potential, he will provide a boost to an aerial attack that finished a mere 50th in the nation in passing yards per game in 2016.
