Recap
Bastille Day always gives the French riders more drive to succeed, and Friday's stage was expected to produce plenty of fireworks. Jakob Fuglsang of Astana was dropped almost immediately, with the riders keeping the pace high from the start.
Global Cycling Network's Matt Stephens was impressed with his desire to keep racing, but also a little concerned:
The pace remained relentless, and as the road started to incline, the GC group quickly thinned out. Landa and Alberto Contador attacked together, gaining a solid lead over the peloton.
The descent was where riders were hoping to do real damage, however. Per the Inner Ring, it required a serious push, but it could be done:
Martin was dropped as Barguil and Nairo Quintana bridged the gap to the leaders, but the Irishman maintained a small lead over the group containing Chris Froome.
Barguil beat Quintana and Contador in a mini-sprint to give the French fans what they wanted on the nation's national holiday, and Landa's inclusion in the group moved him up tremendously in the general classification standings.
