Mike Zimmer Told Michael Floyd He'll Be Cut If He Lied About Failed Alcohol Test

Rob GoldbergJul 13, 2017

Minnesota Vikings receiver Michael Floyd spent a day in jail in June for failing an alcohol test, which he maintained was only caused by drinking Kombucha tea.

While his coach Mike Zimmer is taking his word for it, the player is admittedly on thin ice.

"Do I believe it? I don't know how much tea he drank. I have no clue," Zimmer said of Floyd's excuse, per Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press. "I don't have any doubt why there'd be skepticism, but he told me that he wasn’t (drinking). That it was legit."

"I said, 'If I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to cut you,'" Zimmer added.

The veteran receiver was placed under house arrest this offseason following a DUI arrest that took place during the 2016 season. He then violated the terms of the agreement by failing three self-administered Breathalyzer tests.

His excuse was that he drank tea that he didn't know contained alcohol.

General manager Rick Spielman stood by the player in an official statement after he was sentenced to a day in jail.

Two days after the initial arrest, Floyd was waived by the Arizona Cardinals, an organization where he played his first five seasons in the NFL. He ended his year with the New England Patriots before eventually joining the Vikings in the offseason.

Although the front office and coaching staff clearly has enough faith in him to believe him after a significant setback off the field, Zimmer made it clear he intends on keeping Floyd and the rest of the team in check.
