NBA Summer League 2017: Scores and Highlights from Sunday's Las Vegas Results
Sunday marked the third day of games at 2017 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, with eight games on the marquee.
While top overall pick Markelle Fultz's ankle injury will keep him off the court for the remainder of summer league, according to Philly.com's Keith Pompey, fans in Vegas were scheduled to see No. 3 overall pick Jayson Tatum and No. 4 overall selection Josh Jackson.
Here is a look at how all of the day's action played out.
Sunday Schedule
Atlanta Hawks 84, New Orleans Pelicans 82
Dallas Mavericks 88, Phoenix Suns 77
Milwaukee Bucks 88, Brooklyn Nets 83
Minnesota Timberwolves 90, Denver Nuggets 71
Los Angeles Clippers 86, Utah Jazz 67
Boston Celtics 70, Portland Trail Blazers 64
Memphis Grizzlies 81, Sacramento Kings 75
San Antonio Spurs 101, Philadelphia 76ers 95
Atlanta Hawks 84, New Orleans Pelicans 82
John Collins scored 22 points while DeAndre' Bembry had an all-around performance as the Hawks held on for an 84-82 win over the Pelicans.
New Orleans did not score a point in the final 1:22 of the game. Quinn Cook led the way with a game-high 25 points, while Cheick Diallo had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Jones was the Pels' only other leading scorer, and former first-round pick James Young added nine off the bench.
Collins' stellar performance continues a good start for his NBA career in Las Vegas. The Wake Forest product knocked down nine of his 11 shots, added 10 rebounds and dominated near the basket with his length for most of the contest.
Bembry, a strong summer league performer a year ago, finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. He only needed six shots to make it happen, getting to the free-throw line 10 times (making eight).
Fellow 2016 first-round pick Taurean Prince added 17 points, knocking down three shots from long range. Recently acquired center Diamond Stone added 11 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
The Hawks moved to 1-1, while the Pelicans have dropped both of their games.
Dallas Mavericks 88, Phoenix Suns 77
Dennis Smith Jr. had his second straight breakout performance, scoring 25 points to lead the Mavericks to an 88-77 win over the Suns.
Smith made eight of his 14 attempts from the floor, adding eight rebounds and four assists. He's been borderline impossible to contain off the dribble through his first two summer league contests and is already looking like a bit of a steal at No. 9—even with all of the typical summer league caveats applied.
No other Mavericks player scored more than Brandon Ashley's 12 points, with Dallas' 2-0 record owing itself a great deal to Smith's brilliance. Steven Spieth, the brother of golfer Jordan Spieth, scored two points in three minutes of play.
No. 3 overall pick Josh Jackson wasn't nearly as impressive in his second summer league outing, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds but shooting 6-of-18 from the floor, including a 1-of-7 rate from beyond the arc.
2016 first-round picks Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender did not fare much better. Chriss had 12 points and 10 rebounds but turned the ball over seven times and missed seven of his 10 shots. Bender missed eight of his 11 on his way to a 10-point outing.
Mike James, who scored 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, was the only Phoenix player who stayed consistently in a rhythm.
Milwaukee Bucks 88, Brooklyn Nets 83
The Brooklyn Nets had no answer for Rashad Vaughn, who scored a game-high 31 points to help the Milwaukee Bucks earn an 88-83 win on Sunday.
Vaughn shot 13-of-18 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. He added eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks to what was a strong performance. The NBA shared Vaughn's thoughts after the game:
The Bucks' 2017 draft class combined for a solid showing. D.J. Wilson and Sterling Brown chipped in with 16 points apiece.
The Nets as a whole struggled to find a groove offensively. Brooklyn shot 39.5 percent and went 7-of-25 from beyond the arc.
Caris LeVert was one of the few bright spots for the Nets. He scored a team-high 18 points, though he missed all seven of his three-point attempts. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson narrowly missed out on a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring eight points.
Minnesota Timberwolves 90, Denver Nuggets 71
Perry Ellis came off the bench to score 19 points in 22 minutes on the floor as the Minnesota Timberwolves routed the Denver Nuggets, 90-71.
Thanks in large part to Ellis and Charles Cooke, who had 15 points, the Timberwolves owned a big edge in bench scoring. Minnesota got 44 points from its reserves, compared to 24 points for Denver.
Matt Costello had a big game for the Timberwolves as well, posting a double-double (12 points, 15 rebounds), while Levi Randolph and Marcus Paige combined for 25 points.
The bulk of the Nuggets' offense came from Malik Beasley and Juan Hernangomez. Neither player was gun-shy, attempting 17 and 15 shots apiece. Beasley scored a game-high 20 points, while Hernangomez had 18 points.
Tyler Lydon, whom Denver acquired on draft night, was largely anonymous. The 24th overall pick went 1-of-5 from the floor in 24 minutes. He scored two points with four rebounds and an assist.
Los Angeles Clippers 86, Utah Jazz 67
Bench scoring also played a role in the Los Angeles Clippers' 86-71 win over the Utah Jazz, as Jamil Wilson scored a game-high 18 points off the bench.
Efficiency was the biggest factor in Wilson's strong performance. He shot 7-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Wilson has yet to appear in an NBA regular-season game, splitting his time between the NBA G League and Europe. If he can continue building upon his effort from Sunday, then he may earn himself a shot at an NBA roster spot.
The Jazz announced before the game that first-round pick Donovan Mitchell would be rested, leaving him unable to continue what has been a hot summer league.
Mitchell's absence was glaring for Utah, as the team shot 35.7 percent from the floor. The Jazz also collectively made four three-pointers.
Tony Bradley provided a consistent presence inside for Utah, scoring 16 points and collecting nine rebounds. Beyond Bradley, though, the Jazz had few players on whom they could count to deliver offensively.
Boston Celtics 70, Portland Trail Blazers 64
The Boston Celtics led by 14 points at halftime and fought off a late comeback attempt by the Portland Trail Blazers to earn a 70-64 win Sunday.
Tatum didn't disappoint, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes on the floor. The NBA shared a replay of a turnaround jumper from Tatum on the baseline early in the first quarter:
Although he only scored nine points, Ante Zizic was a handful inside for Portland. He grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots, playing a big role in the Blazers shooting 29.7 percent.
Caleb Swanigan in particular had a hard time, going 4-of-12 and scoring 12 points, while Zach Collins missed on six of his seven field-goal attempts.
Memphis Grizzlies 81, Sacramento Kings 75
The Sacramento Kings trimmed the deficit to two points inside the final four minutes of Sunday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies, but the Grizzlies did enough to hold off the Kings en route to an 81-75 win.
Two of the Kings' most promising talents offered a bit of a mixed bag, as Buddy Hield and De'Aaron Fox scored 12 and 17 points, respectively. Hield struggled, going 4-of-14 on his field-goal attempts and shooting 1-of-5 from three-point territory. Fox was slightly better, connecting on five of his 12 shots.
Fox gave Kings fans a glimpse of his speed when he went coast to coast for a layup in the third quarter:
For Memphis, it was the Wayne Selden and Jarell Martin show. They scored 21 points apiece, with Martin earning a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds. Wade Baldwin IV earned a double-double as well, scoring 12 points and collecting 10 rebounds.
San Antonio Spurs 101, Philadelphia 76ers 95
The Philadelphia 76ers made things interesting late, with Furkan Korkmaz's layup cutting the San Antonio Spurs' lead to four points, 97-93, with 34 seconds remaining. Larry Drew II had an opportunity to eat into the deficit further but missed a technical free throw. From there, the Spurs sealed a 101-95 win at the charity stripe.
Bryn Forbes set what might be the high water mark for scoring in this year's summer league, dropping 35 points on the Sixers. He was a perfect 17-of-17 from the free-throw line, compensating for his 2-of-9 clip from beyond the arc.
The NBA shared highlights from his performance:

Rather than relying on one person to handle the bulk of the scoring load, as was the case for San Antonio, Philadelphia got contributions from across the board. Four Sixers players scored in double figures, with Aaron Harrison's 14 points off the bench leading the team.
