Wednesday's Schedule
Dallas Mavericks 96, Oklahoma City Thunder 75
Detroit Pistons 87, Charlotte Hornets 82
Orlando Magic 84, New York Knicks 73
Mavericks 96 (4-0), Thunder 75 (2-2)
Brandon Paul led the charge with 20 points in 25 minutes as the Mavs easily dispatched the Thunder to punch their ticket to the Orlando Summer League championship game.
Paul knocked down six three-pointers, while also tallying six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in the well-rounded performance. The University of Illinois product, who went undrafted in 2012, has never played a regular-season NBA game. He most recently played for Anadolu Efes in Turkey.
NBA TV highlighted some of his red-hot shooting:
Luis Montero added 16 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench for the Mavs. Jameel Warney (14 points), Dwight Buycks (11) and Ding Yanyuhang (10) also reached double figures in scoring.
Dakari Johnson made eight of his 11 shots from the field en route to a team-high 18 points for the Thunder. The 2015 second-round pick is trying to earn a spot on OKC's roster after spending the past two years with the Oklahoma City Blue in the NBA G League.
Matt Craig of Daily Thunder passed along comments from Mark Daigneault about the seven-footer playing an unorthodox role in the offense:
Semaj Christon put up 16 points and eight assists for OKC, but he also picked up seven turnovers and five fouls in the losing effort. Josh Huestis had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Looking ahead, the Mavericks will be tough to beat in the title game. They won their four preliminary contests by an average of 12.75 points and have gotten progressively better as the event has gone on.
Detroit Pistons 87 (3-1), Charlotte Hornets 82 (2-2)
Henry Ellenson erupted for 29 points to lead the Pistons to a hard-fought victory over the Hornets in a battle between previously 2-1 squads.
The 20-year-old Marquette product, who split last season between Detroit and the G League's Grand Rapids Drive, made four threes as he becomes more comfortable in the stretch-four role. He also added six rebounds and a steal.
Rod Beard of the Detroit News would have liked to see a little more team play, though:
Pistons first-round pick Luke Kennard chipped in 14 points and five boards in 29 minutes. Pierre Jackson added 15 points and six dimes in a reserve role.
Johnny O'Bryant put together a strong effort for Charlotte despite the loss with 26 points and four rebounds. Anthony Gill (15 points), Dwayne Bacon (14) and Kris Joseph (11) also reached double digits in scoring for the Hornets.
Meanwhile, Mangok Mathiang provided a highlight-reel swat, as NBA TV showcased:
Mathiang must continue to make progress at the offensive end to warrant an NBA roster spot, though.
Orlando Magic 84 (2-2), New York Knicks 73 (0-4)
Kalin Lucas scored 20 points as one of four Magic starters in double figures, as they raced to an 84-73 win over the Knicks.
Lucas knocked eight of his 14 shots, including two threes, and added seven assists in his best performance in Orlando. Przemek Karnowski added 14 points and five rebounds. Hassan Martin (12 points) and Marcus Georges-Hunt (10 points) were also in double figures.
First-round pick Jonathan Isaac did not play.
The Knicks were led by a 13-point effort from Jamel Artis, who shot 5-of-7 from the floor. Ognjen Jaramaz (12 points) and Chasson Randle (11 points) were also in double figures.
The Knicks have dropped all four of their games, taking their barebones crew to Orlando. Frank Ntilikina continued to sit out with a knee injury.
