Penn State Sues Former DC Bob Shoop for Almost $900K for Leaving Job
Penn State University is suing former defensive coordinator Bob Shoop for breach of contract when he left the school to assume the same role for the Tennessee Volunteers in January 2016.
PennLive's John Beauge reported Monday that Penn State is seeking $891,856 from Shoop.
Penn State cited a clause in Shoop's contract that required him to pay back 50 percent "of his base pay" for the time left on his contract, which ran until Feb. 15, 2018, if he resigned from his position.
In the lawsuit, school officials wrote Shoop told them through his legal counsel that he doesn't intend to pay back the money Penn State says he owes.
PennLive's Greg Pickel reported in May that Shoop earned a little over $1 million in total compensation during his final year with the Nittany Lions, with his salary accounting for $844,654.
GoVols247's Wes Rucker reported in January 2016 that Shoop was going to make $1.15 million annually with the Volunteers. He also receives various bonuses depending on whether Tennessee makes a bowl game or wins the SEC championship.
Upon hiring Shoop, Dave Hart, Tennessee's athletic director at the time, said the coach was handling his own buyout to finalize his departure from Penn State.
