Lakers Rumors: Rajon Rondo Reportedly Getting 'Strong Consideration' from LA

Rob GoldbergJul 2, 2017

While the Los Angeles Lakers haven't made any big moves since the start of free agency, point guard Rajon Rondo reportedly remains near the top of their list of targets.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the squad is giving the four-time All-Star "strong consideration" as free agency continues.

The Chicago Bulls waived Rondo at the end of June to save about $10 million of the $13.4 million he would have made next season.

Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype reported the veteran would also be interested in joining the Los Angeles Clippers, while the New York Knicks have reached out to him as well, per Ian Begley of ESPN.

Rondo averaged just 7.8 points per game this season, his lowest since his rookie year, but toward the end of the regular season, he showed what still makes him a valuable commodity. The 31-year-old has led the NBA in assists per game three times and remains a strong pure point guard.

K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune also had great things to say about Rondo:

Rondo likely wouldn't have a shot at a starting job with the Lakers, as they just drafted Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 overall pick. Both are lead guards who don't often play off the ball, so while Rondo could be a veteran mentor to Ball, playing time could be hard to come by.

Considering Los Angeles is attempting to clear salary in anticipation of next summer's free agency, adding Rondo for more than a one-year deal would be a major risk.
