2026 NBA Rumors Live Updates with Latest News, Free Agency Buzz and Grades

B/R NBA StaffJul 3, 2026, updated 14 min ago

NBA free agency is in full swing, with plenty of big names still on the market.

LeBron James is still the name to watch, and we now have a literal whiteboard of his potential destinations thanks to agent Rich Paul.

Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons have yet to agree to a new deal. Could a sign-and-trade deal be in the cards? James Harden and Draymond Green are likely headed back to their respective teams, although James' decision could shake things up. Potential stars like Jonathan Kuminga, Peyton Watson, Benedict Mathurin are all in search of a big pay day.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (Miami Heat), Jaylen Brown (Philadelphia 76ers), Kawhi Leonard (Toronto Raptors), LaMelo Ball (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Ja Morant (Portland Trail Blazers) are all on different teams. Could Anthony Davis, Julius Randle, Michael Porter Jr., Trey Murphy III or Lauri Markkanen be next?

As we continue to sift through more NBA news, here's WHAT TO KNOW so far:

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers are the five inner circle teams for LeBron James on Rich Paul's whiteboard.
  • LeBron James would have signed with the New York Knicks this summer had they not won an NBA title. James' agent Rich Paul said the Knicks have "checked in" since free agency began.
  • All but one or two NBA teams have called Rich Paul about LeBron James in free agency. The Jaylen Brown trade "changed everything" according to Paul.
  • Boston Celtics' starting center Neemias Queta is signing a four-year, $56 million contract extension. The Celtics also signed Mitchell Robinson in free agency.
  • The Los Angeles Lakers traded center Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards for shooting guard Jaden Hardy and two future second-round picks. Ayton was going to be demoted to a backup role following the acquisition of Walker Kessler and now joins Anthony Davis in Washington's frontcourt.

Grading Deandre Ayton to Washington Wizards

Los Angeles Lakers v Washington Wizards

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Los Angeles Lakers are trading Deandre Ayton to the Washington Wizards for Jaden Hardy and second-round picks in 2031 and 2032.

Ayton, 27, averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks on 67.1 percent shooting in 72 games as the Lakers' starting center last year. Los Angeles was 5.7 points per 100 possessions worse with Ayton on the floor, however, ranking in the 23rd percentile per Cleaning the Glass.

It's actually surprising to see the Wizards give up any sort of assets to get Ayton, who will presumably be a backup behind Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr. Hardy, 23, looked like he could have been a rotation piece for them moving forward following a trade from the Dallas Mavericks after averaging 12.6 points on 42.0 percent from three in 20.4 minutes.

Hardy will make $6 million this season and has a $6 million team option for 2027-28. Whatever he can do for the Lakers is a bonus, as even getting a pair of second-round picks for Ayton while shedding $2.1 million is the big story here.

The Wizards clearly want to make a run at the playoffs. Giving Trae Young a max contract and giving up draft picks for Ayton isn't the way to get there.

Lakers Trading Deandre Ayton to Washington Wizards

Deandre Ayton's time with the Los Angeles Lakers comes to an end after just one season, as the sign-and-trade for Walker Kessler meant a bench role was coming for the former No. 1 overall pick.

The Lakers receive shooting guard Jaden Hardy in return, a former teammate of Luka Donฤiฤ‡ with the Dallas Mavericks, as well as Wizards' second-round picks in 2031 and 2032.

Grading Dorian Finney-Smith Trade to Charlotte Hornets

The Houston Rockets have traded veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith and three second-round picks to the Charlotte Hornets in a salary-shedding move, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

Finney-Smith is in the second season of a four-year, $52.7 million deal he signed with the Rockets last season. The last two years are non-guaranteed, however, so the Hornets are just on the books for $13.3 million this season.

Per ESPN's Bobby Marks, the second-round picks going to the Hornets include a 2027 from the Memphis Grizzlies (which could be 31st overall!) and 2028 and 2033 selections from Houston.

For the Rockets, this move opens up the full $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, with about $6 million projected to go to Marcus Smart. It saves Houston $20 million in payroll and luxury tax and creates a $13.3 million trade exception they can use to absorb a player for the next year.

Finney-Smith was bad last year (3.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, 27.0 percent from three) but is only 33 and could be a trade candidate for contenders eyeing 3-and-D wings with size.

The Hornets sacrificed most of their mid-level exception by bringing Finney-Smith in, but retained a full $40.7 million trade exception from the LaMelo Ball deal.

This was ultimately a failed experiment for Houston, who now have to lick their wounds following a bad 2025 summer signing.

Jaylen Brown Not a Top-50 Player?

The lack of trade value for Jaylen Brown shocked the NBA, as the five-time All-Star and 2024 FInals MVP was moved for 36-year-old Paul George (who's set to make $54.1 million this season) and draft picks.

Per Sam Amick and Jay King of The Athletic, one NBA general manager didn't think Brown was a top-50 player in the league, however.

After a season where he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and led the Boston Celtics to the No. 2 seed in the East, Bleacher Report had Brown pegged as the 12th-best player in the association, with no writer ranking him lower than 18th overall.

Grading Javonte Green's Deal with Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are bringing back Javonte Green on a one-year deal worth slightly over the veteran minimum.

Green was a steady reserve wing for Detroit last season, the team's only player to appear in all 82 games. The 32-year-old made a career-high 38.1 percent of his threes and put up 6.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.6 minutes.

This is a low-risk deal and the money isn't a problem, although Green is now taking up the Pistons' final roster spot for a team that still hasn't re-signed Jalen Duren or made any significant moves. John Collins was brought in at power forward to replace Tobias Harris, although that's hardly much of an upgrade.

The Pistons will need to pull off some sort of a trade now just to open up a roster spot for Duren.

Green is fine, although it's fair to question Detroit's big-picture plan.

"Everything Changed" after Jaylen Brown Trade, 76ers Now in Play for LeBron James

No team has improved their roster and future more than the Philadelphia 76ers this summer, a team that now has the attention of LeBron James.

With a front office now led by former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and Mike Gansey, who worked for the Cleveland Cavaliers in James' second stint with the team who played high school basketball in Northeast Ohio against him, the 76ers have become an attractive destination.

Trading Paul George and his albatross contract for Jaylen Brown was obviously the biggest move, yet Dean Wade was a perfect free agent signing with his defense and floor-spacing. Anfernee Simons is a great sixth man and scoring guard to bring in off the bench.

James' agent Rich Paul now has Philly included in the top-five teams for his services. The 76ers have one roster spot and a veteran minimum contract available.

Warriors Not at Top of LeBron James' List

The Golden State Warriors have seemingly been a prime destination for LeBron James in free agency, with Draymond Green turning down his $27.7 million player option in order to give the organization more financial flexibility.

The relationship with Stephen Curry from their Olympic run together and the Klutch ties with Green and Anthony Davis, who the Warriors were reportedly pursuing via trade, all made the Warriors a logical destination.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, however, Golden State isn't looked at as being at the top of James' list unless they can pull off a trade for Davis, James' former teammate with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Grading Nemias Queta's Extension with Boston Celtics

Neemias Queta was one of the best surprises of the NBA season, earning a starting role with the Boston Celtics while averaging 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and shooting 65.3 percent overall.

He now lands a four-year, $56 million extension from the Celtics with Boston also picking up his $2.7 million team option for 2026-27.

That's an average salary of $11.74 million over the next five years for Queta, who turns 27 later this month.

Both sides should be very happy with this deal.

Quetta had accumulated about $7 million in his NBA career thus far, starting on two-way contracts. Adding $56 million is truly life changing.

For Boston, the center position is now secure for years to come between Queta and Mitchell Robinson, who signed a three-year, $47.3 million contract with the Celtics in free agency.

No matter who ends up starting, Boston only has about $27 million-ish invested into the center position between two starting-caliber options. That's good value overall.

LeBron James Free Agency Down to Five Teams? Almost Every Franchise Has Called in Free Agency

LeBron James' agent Rich Paul has certainly pulled back the curtain, giving us his personal whiteboard of his client's free agency potential destinations.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves are the five organizations at the center of the board, with the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs in the outer circle.

The biggest surprise of the board is the Warriors not being in James' top-5 teams, which only includes the names Stephen Curry and Draymond Green while excluding Jimmy Butler, who's recovering from a torn ACL and has been in trade rumors for Anthony Davis.

LeBron James Would Have Signed With Knicks Had They Not Won 2026 Title

LeBron James would have signed with the New York Knicks in free agency this summer had they not won the 2026 title, agent Rich Paul stated on Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul.

"The last thing you want to do is mess up something like that. The Knicks has a good thing going. If the Knicks hadn't of won, there would be no board. He'd be going to the Knicks," Paul said.

Paul notes that New York has "checked in" on James in free agency, although it doesn't appear that the four-time MVP will be going to Madison Square Garden, the place James has referred to as "his favorite playground" in the past.
