Derrick Rose Rumors: Free-Agent PG 'Long Shot' to Return to Knicks
A recent report suggests New York Knicks fans shouldn't expect to see Derrick Rose playing for the home team in Madison Square Garden in 2017-18.
On Friday, Stefan Bondy and Frank Isola of the New York Daily News called the chances the Knicks re-sign Rose "a long shot," citing two sources knowledgeable about the situation. Bondy and Isola pointed out there was some mutual interest before the team parted ways with president Phil Jackson.
New York has 18-year-old rookie Frank Ntilikina to take over point guard duties after it drafted him No. 8 overall, but there isn't much proven depth elsewhere. Bondy and Isola shot down the chances of signing the likes of Kyle Lowry, Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague but did point to George Hill as a potential option.
As for Rose, he played 64 games in 2016-17 for New York before he suffered a season-ending meniscus tear.
He averaged 18.0 points and 4.4 assists a night behind 47.1 percent shooting from the field and 21.7 percent shooting from three-point range, but the meniscus tear was a similar refrain for the Memphis product. Knee ailments have derailed what was once one of the most promising careers in the league.
He won the 2010-11 MVP award and was a three-time All-Star for the Chicago Bulls. While he led them to the Eastern Conference Finals, injuries continued to sap him of his explosiveness and court time.
He is still sure to draw interest on the open market considering he is only 28 years old and a household name who would give a front office the opportunity to hold a press conference and sell hopes of him rediscovering his old form.
If Rose does stay healthy and rediscover his prime, it apparently won't be for the Knicks.
