WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 27

Erik BeastonJun 28, 2017

Carmella is the first Miss Money in the Bank.

For the second time.

The Princess of Staten Island capped off an explosive episode of SmackDown Live with her second Money in the Bank victory, this time without controversial second James Ellsworth winning for her.

Her decisive victory established her as one of the prominent stars on the blue brand and the biggest winner of the June 27 broadcast.

Joining her was the SmackDown women's champion Naomi, who obliterated Lana's title aspirations in short order.

Not quite as lucky were NXT exports Sami Zayn and The Hype Bros, both of whom were adversely affected via their latest losses.

How so?

Take a look for yourself.

Winner: Carmella

1 of 4

Carmella book-ended Tuesday night's show, kicking the broadcast off by confronting general manager Daniel Bryan then resorting to using a steel chair to neutralize Becky Lynch and regain the Money in the Bank briefcase that was taken from her by the former WWE champion a week ago.

For the second week in a row, The Princess of Staten Island was the most prominent star on SmackDown Live, a young performer coming of age before the WWE Universe. Her performance, be it as the whining and protesting villain during the night's opening promo segment or the resourceful and underhanded villain who won the main event, was stellar throughout.

Like Alexa Bliss before her, Carmella has far surpassed the success she achieved in NXT, becoming a bigger star on the main roster than she was in front of the Full Sail University fans. She has embraced her heel persona, gladly bear-hugged "home boy" James Ellsworth and is thriving as a potential championship run awaits.

Not too shabby for the last pick in the 2016 WWE Draft, huh?

Losers: The Hype Bros

2 of 4

When Zack Ryder returned from his near debilitating knee injury and reunited with Mojo Rawley just prior to Money in the Bank, it felt as if a renewed push for The Hype Bros was in order. After all, the duo was on its way to a tag team title showdown last December when Long Island Iced Z suffered his untimely injury and was setup nicely to challenge The Usos if WWE Creative so dictated.

Instead, it booked The Hype Bros to battle The Usos in non-title fashion. Not only did Ryder and Rawley fail to win the match, they were beaten down during the commercial break and finished off within seconds of the show returning to the air.

Ryder was portrayed as a jobber, absorbing whatever punishment was dealt and eating a decisive pinfall without fighting his way back into the bout.

Worst of all, The Hype Bros were treated as an afterthought as The New Day hit the ring for a promo that set up their upcoming championship opportunity against The Usos.

Winner: Naomi

3 of 4

Tuesday night, Naomi defeated Lana to retain her SmackDown Women's Championship.

That alone does not make the Queen of Glow a winner. She kicked out of The Ravishing Russian's sitout spinebuster finisher and answered with a kick, then a split-legged moonsault for the pinfall victory.

The champion shrugged off a move that will finish many an opponent in the future and put a very quick, very emphatic end to Lana's title aspirations. After weeks of mediocre booking, Naomi was presented as a strong champion, unaffected by her opponent's fierce onslaught.

Booking representative of her status as champion, rather than an afterthought as she has been of late, only benefits her in the long run.

The question now is where she goes from here.

Loser: Sami Zayn

4 of 4

Remember the opportunities SmackDown Live was supposed to bring Sami Zayn?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Or something like that.

Unfortunately, SmackDown Live has been the Land of Opportunity for everyone but Zayn, who remains the consummate underdog trapped in a talented midcard. He wins some matches, loses others and never really moves up or down.

He's just...there.

Sure, his next feud with Mike Kanellis was teased when he interrupted the Power of Love segment, but moments later he lost to Baron Corbin clean in the center of the ring.

Right out of the gate, WWE Creative is telling audiences that Zayn vs. Kanellis is going to be a thing, but it is not of any great importance because the lead protagonist just got his ass handed to him by the Money in the Bank winner.

Zayn appears destined to flounder in the midcard, left to wallow in mediocrity no matter how extraordinary his performances are. That is majorly disappointing given how excited fans and the performer were for his arrival on Tuesday nights.
