WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 21

Erik BeastonJun 21, 2017

After suffering a potentially debilitating shoulder injury prior to TakeOver: Chicago, Ember Moon returned to the squared circle Wednesday night for a showdown with on-again, off-again rival Peyton Royce.

That was not the main event of the broadcast, though.

That honor would be bestowed upon Kassius Ohno and Aleister Black, who tore the house down in a rare babyface vs. babyface bout.

Would the master of the KO stand victoriously, or would he fade to black?

Sanity's Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe rounded out the remainder of the card, which may not have built on storylines of recent weeks but kept the ball rolling for a brand rediscovering its identity just in time for its mega August TakeOver special.

Ember Moon vs. Peyton Royce

1 of 4

Ember Moon returned to action Wednesday night, squaring off against a familiar foe in Peyton Royce.

She overwhelmed and outclassed her opponent early, driving her into the corner with a dropkick. An attempt at a high-risk move proved futile as Royce crotched her on the top rope. Moon blocked a fisherman suplex from the top but fell prey to interference from Billie Kay behind the official's back.

Moon fought back, withstanding the onslaught from her opponent, including former women's champion Victoria's Widow's Peak. She answered with the Eclipse for her first post-injury victory.

Ember Moon defeated Peyton Royce

Grade

B

Analysis

Moon picks up right where she left off, scoring an impressive victory Wednesday night.

Royce is always a solid opponent for her. They have worked numerous times in NXT and always have, at the very least, an entertaining bout.

While Royce and Kay continue to be the over heels who accomplish little more than putting others over, Moon looks very much like the Superstar destined to unseat Asuka atop the women's division.

The Ealy Brothers vs. Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe

2 of 4

The physically imposing, intensely physical Ealy Brothers squared off against the unstable, unhinged Sanity duo of Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe.

Wolfe and Young tagged out in rapid succession, keeping their younger, lesser experienced opponents guessing.

Wolfe wore one of them down with a rear chin lock, digging his knee into the back for added torque.

He would lift the same opponent into a side suplex, holding him there while Young leapt from the top rope with a neckbreaker. Three seconds later and Sanity was back on the winning track.

Result

Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe defeated The Ealy Brothers

Grade

C

Analysis

This was a little more one-sided than it probably should have been. The Ealy Brothers, for their inexperience, look the part of a physical force. Unfortunately, they were decimated in an entirely one-sided bout that did not really benefit either team.

Sanity should have beaten themthat much fans know. They gain nothing from doing what they were supposed to.

The Ealys look like glorified jobbers with an entrance.

The result? A useless match that served little purpose other than to remind fans Sanity is still around.

Sonya Deville vs. Rachael Evers

3 of 4

Sonya Deville, known formerly by her real name Daria Berenato, squared off against Rachael Evers in singles competition.

The Tough Enough product returned to action after weeks of video packages and ran through her second-generation opponent. A nasty spear set up a Kimura armbar for the submission victory.

Result

Sonya Deville defeated Rachael Evers

Grade

C

Analysis

The purpose of this one was to reintroduce Deville to the NXT fanbase and showcase her for viewers who may be unfamiliar with her. In that vein, it succeeded. She looked like a dominant force as she ran through Evers, who did an admirable job of putting her over.

The issue that faces Deville is her inexperience and how much it shines through against better, tenured wrestlers.

Even Evers, who does not have much more experience than Deville, looked more comfortable between the ropes. That will be something the young performer and management will have to camouflage as she rises up the ranks in NXT.

Kassius Ohno vs. Aleister Black

4 of 4

Two of the more celebrated stars in NXT stood across the squared circle from each other Wednesday night, seeking to score a huge victory that would propel them into the championship picture. Two fan favorites, they captivated the audience inside Full Sail University.

Black wasted little time trapping Ohno in a guillotine choke but was not able to keep it applied effectively, Ohno sitting him on the top rope and taking away his leverage.

Black gained the first clear upper hand, sending Ohno to the arena floor, teasing a dive and taking a seat in the center of the ring.

A strong combination by Black was answered by a discombobulating forearm from Ohno that sent him to the arena floor. Ohno wrestled control of the bout after the break, working a chinlock on his opponent. He even took a moment to mock Black, who was not amused by the display of disrespect.

He answered with a big kick across the back, but Ohno regained control. Ohno talked trash, delivered a big kick to the face and followed with a hard right across the back.

Black blocked a punch and mounted his comeback, complete with a double stomp that left his opponent writhing in pain.

The competitors traded big boots to the face, Ohno falling on top of his opponent for a close near-fall.

Black lit Ohno up with a flurry of kicks and backhand slaps for a two-count.

Ohno scored a discus kick to the face and stacked Black up as the near-falls piled up.

After an exchange of hard strikes and a release suplex from Ohno, Black fired off Black Mass from out of nowhere for the win.

Result

Aleister Black defeated Kassius Ohno

Grade

A

Analysis

This was the breakthrough match Black needed in order to be taken seriously as a threat to the NXT Championship. Squash matches and a match with Andrade Almas were nice, but this was the first time he looked like a guy capable of thriving in the main event spotlight and carrying NXT as its main protagonist.

He is a potential face of the brand.

Ohno was fantastic, working as a heel to the point that he openly mocked his opponent. While he is very clearly a babyface poised to feud with Hideo Itami, his adaptability will prove invaluable to the brand going forward.

A hard-hitting match that wowed the crowd and proved that NXT is not devoid of talent capable of headlining for the foreseeable future.
