Tim Mickelson was the golf coach at Arizona State for five years, leading the team to two top-10 finishes.
While Phil Mickelson did not participate in this week's U.S. Open—instead opting to see his daughter's graduation—he decided it was the right time to make a change.
"After 25 very rewarding and memorable years, Bones and I have mutually decided to end our player-caddie relationship." the 47-year-old said. "Our decision is not based on a single incident. We just feel it's the right time for a change."
"My relationship and history with Bones far exceeds golf," he added. "He has been one of the most important and special people in my life since the day we met and I will always be grateful for everything he has done for me."
Mackay, 52, has been caddying professionally since 1990 and began working for Mickelson in 1992.
