Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma Reportedly Agree to 5-Year Contract Extension
Oklahoma reportedly has already shown its faith in Lincoln Riley by signing the new football coach to a five-year deal, according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports.
The fully guaranteed deal pays the 33-year-old coach $3.1 million per year, according to George Schroeder of USA Today. Brooke Pryor of The Oklahoman confirmed the amount with a full breakdown of the contract.
Riley took over for Bob Stoops, who abruptly retired at the beginning of June after 18 years with the Sooners. He is currently the youngest coach in FBS, but those who have spent time with him believe he is up to the challenge.
"I understood that this guy is bound to be a head coach and a really good one," Stoops said of his replacement at his retirement press conference, per Ben Baby of the Dallas Morning News.
"It crossed our minds that we might be looking at one of the true, special rising stars that could be a head coach in very short term," athletic director Joe Castiglione added.
Riley was Oklahoma's offensive coordinator for two years after quickly moving up the ranks with Texas Tech and East Carolina.
Although he still needs to prove himself on the field, he has already shown he can keep the Sooners running smoothly with three recruit commitments in two weeks on the job, per Scout.com.
