Big Cass Primed to Become Breakout Star on WWE Raw After Breakup with Enzo Amore

Ryan DilbertJun 20, 2017

Big Cass is a hungry, snarling predator suddenly unleashed on the WWE Raw landscape.

The Queens, New York, native admitted Monday night to being behind the recent attacks on his tag team partner Enzo Amore. The fury he showed as he broke his buddy's heart for all the world to see was a preview of the beast he will become. As a solo act, Big Cass is headed for the best stretch of his career.

Real-life friends Big Cass and Amore have long made an entertaining pair with plenty of chemistry.

Amore carried the weight during their promos. Big Cass did the heavy lifting once the bell rang. They were energetic crowd-pleasers and constant purveyors of catchphrases.

But that time has come to an end.

On Monday's Raw, The Realest Guys in the Room split up in a dramatic, gut-wrenching scene. Corey Graves revealed security footage of the recent backstage attacks the two men had suffered. It turns out Cass was behind it all, faking the attacks on himself and laying out his pal Amore from behind due to frustration.

Before laying out his partner, Cass explained that he had grown tired of Amore holding him back.

He was discontented with not winning, irritated by Amore's rambling. Being his protector had grown tiresome. He called Amore dead weight, blaming him for his lack of championships to this point.

The guys at Mat Men podcast praised Big Cass' performance:

He certainly did. This was the most compelling the powerhouse has ever been. He didn't feel like a sidekick in this moment; he looked like a star.

As Amore's partner, Cass had to do a lot of comedy. The two friends starred in goofy KFC commercials. Their pre-match shtick had begun to drag and run out of creative avenues to take. WWE even had the big man listing off types of Chinese food at Payback for some reason.

Change is coming now, though.

Big Cass won't be the enforcer in the background anymore. He won't be a part of a tag team that was never presented as a serious threat to anyone.

He will be on his own, the subject of more serious stories and a title contender.

Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch noted that the move opens doors for Cass:

Rather than be near the bottom of the pile in the tag team division, Big Cass is set to devour Amore en route to climbing the Raw ladder. He can morph into a gladiator after being a hype man for so long. A spot in the Universal Championship picture is suddenly a possibility.

The Big Cass we saw a flash of last August on Raw is going to be around on a full-time basis.

He clashed with Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens last year in a Fatal 4-Way match for the Universal Championship. Without Amore at his side, he was allowed to be more serious and focused. He was a contender, not a midcarder that night.

His entrance and offensive flurries generated big reactions.

PWTorch columnist James Caldwell attended that Raw and noted how the audience took to the big math. "The crowd was really into Owens and Cass as the fresh faces in the title picture," he wrote. "Big Cass was over at a Superstar-level."

Cass is set to tap into that once more. He will have the spotlight to himself. WWE will give him every opportunity to connect, to convince us all that he's the next big thing.

He's limited in the ring, relying on a steady diet of power moves and big boots. He will never be AJ Styles as a performer. Still, he's big and has a commanding presence. And as he showed on Monday's Raw, viciousness looks quite good on him.

There's more room on the stage for Big Cass, and he's going to make the most of it in the coming months.
