Brooks Koepka broke open a tight tournament with three straight birdies on the 14th through 16th holes and won the U.S. Open with a confident and steady show that bordered on the spectacular.

Koepka was 16 under par for the tournament, and that matched the record set by Rory McIlroy when he won the U.S. Open at Congressional in 2011.

The 27-year-old Koepka closed the tournament with an 18-hole score of 67. Koepka became the sixth consecutive first-time major winner with his sensational performance Erin Hills, Wisconsin.

He admitted to Fox analyst Curtis Strange after the victory he was thrilled with the win.

"It's kind of hard to miss the leaderboard, I knew where I stood," Koepka said on the broadcast. "I just tried to keep the hammer down and go as low as I could.

"It's unbelievable to be on this trophy with the names here."

Strange mentioned historical players including Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, whose names are on the U.S. Open Trophy.

Koepka's victory comes in perhaps the most prestigious tournament on the tour and the biggest of all the major championships. The honor and prestige of winning the event are what many golfers dream of accomplishing during their career, and the victory also comes with a first prize check of $2.16 million.

The champion started the event with birdies on the first and second holes, and if he had any semblance of nerves, they disappeared immediately. Koepka shot a 33 on the front nine without any bogeys, but he made his only mistake of the day on the 10th hole when he bogeyed the par four

Hideki Matsuyama

While Koepka was in first place, Hideki Matsuyama was making a charge. He posted a 66 to move to 12 under par, and that left him one stroke behind Koepka at the time he finished his round.

It would have been easy for the eventual champion to feel the pressure, but he was as smooth and powerful as he could be.

He surged with his string of birdies starting with the 14th hole, and he controlled the tournament the rest of the way.

Koepka used this power and accuracy to his advantage. His approach shots all seemed to finish within birdie range, and his tee shots regularly out-drove his competitor by 30 yards or more.

Matsuyama and third-round co-leader Brian Harman tied for second at 12 under par, four strokes behind Koepka.

English golfer Tommy Fleetwood finished fourth at 11 under, while Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas and Xander Schauffele finished tied for fifth at 10 under par.
