Top Pick in 2017 MLB Draft Royce Lewis, Minnesota Twins Agree to Contract

Adam WellsJun 17, 2017

Five days after Royce Lewis was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, the shortstop from California has agreed to a contract with the Minnesota Twins.

Per FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman, Lewis will receive a high-school record $6.725 million in his signing bonus with the Twins after he passed his physical.

The Twins made a big bet on Lewis, who is the franchise's fifth player drafted in the top 10 since 2012. He was also the first player taken No. 1 overall by the team since Joe Mauer in 2001.

Only Kyle Wright, who was drafted fifth overall by the Atlanta Braves, has received more signing bonus money than Lewis, with MLB.com's Mark Bowman reporting the figure at $7 million.

MLB.com ranked Lewis as the fifth-best prospect in this year's draft class and third-best high school player, behind right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene and left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore.

Slot value for the No. 1 overall pick this year was $7,770,700, per MLB.com's Jim Callis.
