Dontari Poe Reportedly to Receive $125,000 Bonus After Falcons Weigh-in

Tyler ConwayJun 13, 2017

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Dontari Poe said Tuesday that he was "where [he] need to be" regarding his weight, which means he should receive a $125,000 bonus check from the team.

“We’re pleased where Dontari is at, weight-wise, workout-wise,” coach Dan Quinn said, per Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' website. “We’ve got some strong men, he’s one of them. As we’re going through some of the testing strength wise, he’s certainly been one that’s impressed us in that way.”

It was previously reported Poe would receive the bonus if he came in at 340 pounds or less Tuesday.

Poe, 26, was listed at 346 pounds last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He recorded a career-low 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2016 before agreeing to a one-year contract with the Falcons in March.

This has been something of a big offseason for weight-clause contracts. The Seattle Seahawks have a similar arrangement with running back Eddie Lacy, who has already made $110,000 in bonuses after hitting goal weights.

Poe is expected to be the Falcons' starting nose tackle this season, so it's unlikely they want him dropping too much weight. But keeping him in healthy playing condition will be paramount for himself and the Falcons for making this likely one-year rental a success.
