Spain Earn 2-2 International Friendly Draw Against Colombia After Late Equaliser

Gianni VerschuerenJun 7, 2017

Alvaro Morata scored a late goal to give Spain a 2-2 draw in an international friendly against Colombia on Wednesday.

David Silva gave La Roja the lead, but a defensive blunder allowed Edwin Cardona to pull his side level before half-time. Radamel Falcao completed the comeback after the break with his first international goal in two years.

A win seemed all but certain for the visitors, but Morata popped up late with a class header.

Robbie Dunne of AS English shared the lineups for both teams:

The hosts wasted little time, grabbing hold of possession right from kick-off and pushing forward. Colombia didn't give up many chances, although they had to be on their toes to deny Silva on three separate occasions after 10 minutes.

Juan Cuadrado played an active role out wide, and AS English couldn't help but take a shot at the Juventus man, harkening back to the UEFA Champions League final:

Pepe Reina made a wonderful save to deny the winger and Falcao thought he had earned a penalty in the follow-up, as Gerard Pique clearly pulled the AS Monaco man back. He did so while Falcao was offside, however, and the flag brought an end to the attack.

The South Americans improved after a difficult opening spell, but Silva still gave Spain the lead, converting after a perfect cross from Pedro. Per WhoScored.com, the Manchester City man has been in excellent form for La Roja in his last few starts:

Iago Aspas missed a golden opportunity to double the lead, before a series of nasty tackles led to several bookings and stoppages in play. The break seemed to favour Colombia, who went close through James Rodriguez.

Another goal before half-time was needed to ensure the match remained tense, and Cardona delivered after 39 minutes. Cesar Azpilicueta, Pique and Reina all were at fault for leaving the scorer wide open, although Dunne laid most of the blame with the goalkeeper:

Davinson Sanchez ended the half with a dreadful tackle that only resulted in a yellow card, and the official smartly whistled for half-time a little early, allowing the managers to calm down their players and remind them this was only a friendly.

Both teams set out to find the lead goal early in the second half, leading to plenty of attractive football. Nacho Monreal sliced a shot wide after a nice move, and Falcao fared better on the other side of the pitch, giving Reina no chance with his header.

Per WhoScored.com, it was a welcome sight to see the AS Monaco man back on the scoresheet:

Koke went close to the equaliser with a superb free-kick, but David Ospina was on hand to make the save. Morata went even close, just missing the target with a header.

The great pace of the match dropped as both teams made more substitutions, as tends to happen in friendlies. While Spain were still gunning for an equaliser, Colombia were now happy to sit back and defend.

But there was drama still in store, as Saul Niguez played in Morata with a great cross in the final minutes, and the Real Madrid man beautifully got in front of his man to head home.

Dunne was impressed:

La Roja pushed on for a late winner, but Colombia stood firm to earn a deserved draw.
