Sam Dyson Traded from Rangers to Giants for Cash or Player to Be Named Later

The San Francisco Giants announced Tuesday they acquired right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson from the Texas Rangers.

San Francisco also received cash considerations in exchange for either a player to be named later or cash considerations of its own.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported Dyson will join the major league team when he reports to the Giants.

This trade comes after Texas designated him for assignment Friday, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com). The move followed a disastrous showing Wednesday when Dyson allowed two home runs and three runs in the 10th inning of Texas' loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, marking his sixth loss of the season to go with four blown saves in four chances.

Dyson, who went on the disabled list in April, sports a 10.80 ERA and 2.58 WHIP through 17 appearances, which would both be career-worst marks discounting the 0.2 innings he pitched in 2012.

Despite the 2017 struggles, the relief pitcher entered the season with three straight campaigns of a sub-2.70 ERA and tallied 38 saves for the Rangers in 2016 as they proceeded to win the American League West.

With that track record, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported multiple clubs showed interest in Dyson after the Rangers made it clear they were going to move him.

San Francisco will add him to a bullpen that is a middling 14th in the league in ERA, per ESPN.com. The fourth-place Giants are 24-35 and 12 games behind the Colorado Rockies in the National League West.

If the 29-year-old Dyson can tap into his production from last season, he can provide his new team with a much-needed boost heading into the middle portion of the schedule.
