Iman Shumpert Reportedly May Start over JR Smith in Game 3, Had IV After Game 2
Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue may make an adjustment to his team's starting lineup ahead of Game 3 of the 2017 NBA Finals.
ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin reported the Cavs coaching staff is considering elevating Iman Shumpert to the first unit in place of JR Smith.
McMenamin also reported Shumpert required an IV to rehydrate following Cleveland's 132-113 Game 2 defeat to the Golden State Warriors.
Replacing Smith with Shumpert would make sense for the Cavaliers. Much of Smith's value comes from his three-point shooting. He's a 37.4 percent shooter from deep, and since arriving in Cleveland, three-pointers have accounted for 65.3 percent of his field-goal attempts, per Basketball Reference.
Through the first two games of the Finals, Smith's shooting is nowhere to be seen. He has three points in the two losses and shot 1-of-4 from beyond the arc.
ESPN.com's Zach Lowe believes Smith's struggles are causing a big problem for Cleveland:
Granted, Shumpert may provide even less offense than Smith. He's 3-of-12 for the series so far and a career 34 percent three-point shooter.
However, Shumpert is a superior perimeter defender. During the regular season, he and Smith had nearly equal defensive ratings—108.2 for Shumpert and 108.1 for Smith—but the Cavs are giving up 2.7 fewer points per 100 possessions in the postseason with Shumpert on the floor compared to Smith, per NBA.com.
After his team gave up 113 and 132 points to the Warriors, Lue needs to do something to slow down Golden State's offense. Going with Shumpert in the starting lineup Wednesday night would be the simplest way to try to turn things around.
