Memorial Tournament 2017: Daniel Summerhays Overtakes Jason Dufner for Lead

Alec NathanJun 3, 2017

Jason Dufner entered moving day with a comfortable five-shot lead after he set the Memorial Tournament's 36-hole scoring record with back-to-back 65s, but Muirfield Village wasn't nearly as kind to him Saturday.

With a chance to pull away after entering the day at 14 under in Dublin, Ohio, Dufner recorded four straight bogeys during a tumultuous stretch on the front nine and watched his lead evaporate in a hurry, according to ESPN.com's Jason Sobel:

All told, Dufner shot a five-over 77 and now sits at nine under for the tournament—four shots back of leader Daniel Summerhays.

Here's a glance at the top of the leaderboard, which features Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson, among others:

Unlike Dufner, Summerhays played a composed, blemish-free round that saw him post five birdies and one bogey to move into the lead.

The 33-year-old, who has never won on the PGA Tour, is now in unfamiliar territory.

Entering the Memorial, Summerhays hadn't finished better than 40th in any of his last 11 starts. He had also missed four cuts during that span—including an early exit at last week's Dean & Deluca Invitational.

But in order to capture his first win of the season, Summerhays will have to hold off a hungry pack that includes some of the world's most talented players.

Chief among them is Watson, who turned up the intensity after making the turn for the back nine.

Despite shooting an underwhelming two-over on the front, Watson responded with a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie sequence on hole Nos. 10-13 to wedge his way into the top five.

The PGA Tour on Twitter documented his ascent up the leaderboard:

As if that weren't impressive enough, Watson rolled in a long-distance birdie on No. 18 to cap off his round in style, via Golf Channel on Twitter:

Watson is now nine-under after shooting a four-under 68 that included a back-nine 30, and he will have a chance to achieve a season-first if he maintains his scalding stylings on Sunday, according to Golf Channel's Justin Ray:

Summerhays will also have to contend with Kuchar, who has been in something of a groove lately.

Coming off a ninth-place finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson and 12th-place finish at the Dean & Deluca, Kuchar will enter the final 18 holes just three shots off the pace now that he's at 10 under following a five-under 67.

As if that competition weren't daunting enough for Summerhays, Rickie Fowler (eight under) and Justin Thomas (nine under) are lurking close by with their sights set on stealing a title.

In other words, the Memorial's stacked leaderboard should make for a dramatic finish in some shape or form as the proceedings get set to conclude.
