Cricket: What is England's Problem? Part 1 of many!
England: perennial underachievers. Just generally, but especially in cricket.
The inventors of the game are the side who are, perhaps, struggling the most in world cricket at this moment in time. Nothing against New Zealand should disguise this fact.
As is sometimes the way, we all know that this decline started at the moment of England's greatest ever glory: the 2005 Ashes. They weren't focused enough on the next step, which happened to be two sub-continental tours, and it all came tumbling down.
And i mean tumbling. From Australia's closest rivals to 5th in the rankings; I would argue that England haven't had a great series win since 2005. The Oval debacle led to a 3-0 win over Pakistan and the once great Windies were swept aside last summer.
However, neither of these are without controversy, in the case of Pakistan, or decent opposition, with regards to the West Indies, Shivnarine Chanderpaul aside.
In fact, England's greatest moment since was in Mumbai when Flintoff led them to victory...to draw the series... and the match came out on DVD.
So, I hope to expose some of the failings, perhaps in the build up to 2005, certainly in the handling of that success. I will expose the decisions made when trying to steady the ship and those who jumped, or at least should have, when it began to sink.
Perhaps i could even write something good! Amongst the disappointments, there have been improvements.
However, with the IPL's cash register still echoing in the Long Room and the County Championship sides filled with Kolpaks and deprived of an overseas player, these issues need to be looked at.
Perhaps English Cricket can still save itself.
