IPL Results 2017: Scores, Points Table, Schedule After April 19

Sunrisers Hyderabad moved up to second in the 2017 Indian Premier League standings on Wednesday, as they beat the Delhi Daredevils by 15 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, a brilliant partnership of 136 between Shikhar Dhawan (70) and Kane Williamson (89) pushed Hyderabad to an impressive 191 for four from their 20 overs. That was despite the best efforts of Chris Morris, who bowled brilliantly to take four for 26.

In response, the Daredevils made a solid start, although they never looked in control of the run chase. Shreyas Iyer top-scored for the visitors with an unbeaten 50, but they could only muster 176 for five.

Sunrisers vs. Daredevils

Hyderabad, 191 for 4 (Williamson 89, Dhawan 70), beat Delhi, 176 for 5 (Iyer 50*, Nair 42), by 15 runs.

With so much firepower at the top of the order, Delhi needed to make a strong start with the ball, having lost the toss. But as noted by cricket writer Freddie Wilde, they were sloppy in their early play:

While Morris was able to get rid of the dangerous David Warner in the second over for just four, the wicket looked in excellent shape, and once Williamson and Dhawan came together, they settled in.

So often in the past, the Sunrisers have been reliant on Warner, but they showcased their strength in batting depth here. Dhawan was the steadier of the two men at the crease, content with waiting for his opportunities; Williamson, by contrast, started off slowly and accelerated his scoring brilliantly.

As noted by cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, the two men worked superbly in tandem at the crease:

When Williamson departed in the 17th over, the hosts were in a fine position to push on at 148 for two. But Morris helped sap some of their momentum, grabbing the wicket of Dhawan in the next over and helping Delhi restrict the Sunrisers to a score below 200 by bowling Yuvraj Singh, too.

Even so, as noted by Wilde, they were facing an uphill task at the halfway point:

It was up to the visiting batsmen to take advantage of a fine wicket, although after the second-over dismissal of Sam Billings for 13, they never really got going.

Williamson and Dhawan had kicked on to make significant scores once they got in, but Delhi's key men couldn't do the same. 

Karun Nair and Sanju Samson looked in fine touch at the crease, although they could only muster scores of 42 and 33, respectively. Between their respective dismissals, the Daredevils also lost Rishabh Pant for a golden duck.

With the run rate shooting up, Iyer offered some late resistance for Delhi, smashing 50 from 31 balls in a fine late cameo. He was supported superbly by the Sri Lankan Angelo Mathews, who hammered 31 from 23 deliveries.

However, the Sunrisers bowlers kept their cool in the dying embers of the game, limiting the Daredevils to 176 for five and securing their fourth win from six matches so far this season.
