The Braves also announced they added Johan Camargo to the 25-man roster to replace Kemp.
Questions arose about Kemp's durability when he played 179 combined games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 and 2013. However, he has appeared in 150-plus games in each of the past three years.
While Kemp remained healthy during that time, his performance fell significantly from his peak in 2011, when he finished second in the National League MVP voting.
The 32-year-old had a .268/.304/.499 slash line to go with 35 home runs and 108 RBI last year. While Kemp boasted strong power numbers, FanGraphs gave him a minus-21.3 defensive rating, which offset his contributions at the plate.
In their lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Miami Marlins, the Braves listed Emilio Bonifacio in left field, so Bonifacio may be tasked with patrolling left until Kemp is healthy enough to return.
