Rudy Gobert 1st Jazz Player to Reach Tuesday's Stat Line Since Team Move to Utah
Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert totaled 20 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots in Monday's 108-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. It's the first time any player has reached those three markers in a game since the team relocated from New Orleans to Salt Lake City in 1979, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN.com).
Gobert split time at center with Enes Kanter in 2014-15, averaging 26.3 minutes per contest in his second year after seeing sparse minutes as a rookie. The Jazz made him the primary contributor at the position in February of 2015 when they decided to deal Kanter to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a three-team trade.
He started 60 of the 61 games he played in last season, upping his minutes to 31.7 per contest while boosting his outputs to 9.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.5 assists per game. Gobert's production has increased further in his fourth NBA campaign, leading the team in both rebounds (12.9) and blocks (2.6) per game. The France native is also third in scoring (13.8) behind Gordon Hayward (21.8) and George Hill (16.9).
Standing 7'1", Gobert is one of the tallest players currently in the league. His play on the inside led to the Jazz inking him to a four-year, $102 million contract prior to last season. It's slated to kick in next year, keeping him with Utah through at least the 2020-21 campaign.
The 24-year-old's play has assisted the Jazz to the fourth seed in the Western Conference thus far. While it may be difficult for the club to compete with top teams like the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs right now, the Jazz at least have a solid young piece to build around down low for the foreseeable future.
