Alshon Jeffery Denies Seeking Media's Advice Before Signing Contract with Eagles

Joseph ZuckerMar 23, 2017

Philadelphia Eagles wideout Alshon Jeffery denied Thursday he reached out to any member of the NFL media prior to agreeing to a deal with the Eagles.

Jeffery's tweet comes after The MMQB's Tim Rohan wrote an article profiling Adam Schefter of ESPN. In the piece, Rohan recounted a moment in which Schefter received a call from Jeffery to get an idea of the market for free-agent receivers.

Schefter goes through the contract numbers on Smith, Jackson and Pierre Garcon, slowly, so Jeffery can apparently write them down. "It's all about the guarantee, Alshon," Schefter says. "It's all about the guarantee … Your average per year could be $100 million. It doesn't matter. If they're going to guarantee you the majority of the contract, that's what you want."

"

As their conversation ends, Schefter asked Jeffery to inform him when he made a final decision about his future. Instead, Jeffery told ESPN's Josina Anderson he was signing with Philadelphia.

If he did speak with Schefter, Jeffery may have heeded the reporter's advice.

He'll earn $8.75 million guaranteed from the Eagles as part of his $9.5 million deal, per Spotrac. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Jeffery declined a longer contract with the Minnesota Vikings in the hope he can play himself into more money down the road.

Schefter seems as though he could have a career as an NFL player agent should he want an active hand in behind-the-scenes dealmaking rather than just reporting on it.
