Billy Donovan Says He Is Committed to Thunder Amid College Coaching Rumors
With big-time colleges seeking new head basketball coaches, Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan is shooting down rumors he's seeking any other job.
Per ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman, Donovan said he is "very, very happy in the NBA and in Oklahoma City—and is committed there."
Donovan's name has been bandied about for the vacancy at Indiana University, though he's consistently expressed his happiness with the Thunder.
"I am totally happy here," Donovan said Thursday, via Brett Dawson of the Oklahoman. "I love it here. I love the guys I work with every day. I love our staff, the organization. As far as I'm concerned, my commitment is totally here and doing the best job I can while I'm here."
Indiana fired Tom Crean on Thursday following the team's disappointing 18-16 record and loss to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NIT.
Donovan spent 21 seasons as a college head coach, including 19 at the University of Florida from 1996 to 2015. He won two national championships and was hired by the Thunder in April 2015, signing a five-year deal.
At the time Donovan took over Oklahoma City, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were leading the franchise, and the team advanced within one win of the NBA Finals last year. Durant has since joined the Golden State Warriors, though Westbrook is still on board and is averaging a triple-double in an MVP-caliber season.
Even if Donovan were to show interest in a college job, the Thunder still have one month left in the regular season and a potential playoff run to go through before he would theoretically become available.
Donovan would certainly bring cachet to any collegiate landing spot, but he's still in the early stages of his NBA coaching career. He has been successful, too, posting a 95-56 record in less than two full seasons in Oklahoma City.
