Per Yates, late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis once tried to hire Mayock for a front-office position. Current Redskins president Bruce Allen was a Raiders executive from 1996 through 2003.
Washington announced the firing of GM Scot McCloughan on Thursday following his eyebrow-raising absence from the NFL Scouting Combine.
The 58-year-old Mayock had a brief NFL career as a safety with the New York Giants in the 1980s, but he has no front-office experience.
He has worked for NFL Network since 2005 and became the lead draft guru for the channel.

According to Schefter and Yates, the Redskins aren't expected to hire a new general manager until after the 2017 NFL draft.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik is reportedly among those being considered for the position as well.
