Dennis Schroder Suspended by Hawks for Failing to Report After All-Star Break
The Atlanta Hawks suspended guard Dennis Schroder for Friday's game against the Miami Heat for failure to report to the team following the All-Star break.
Bleacher Report's Howard Beck tweeted head coach Mike Budenholzer's statement on the matter:
According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (h/t CBSSports.com), Schroder missed Wednesday's practice due to travel issues after going to his native Germany during the break.
Vivlamore explained the visa problem Schroder encountered in the following tweet:
The 23-year-old is enjoying a breakout season for the Hawks. He is second on the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game and first in assists with 6.3 per contest, both of which are career highs.
Schroder has started all 56 games he has appeared in this season after primarily coming off the bench during his first three years in the league.
The 2013 first-round pick was stuck behind Jeff Teague on the depth chart, but following Teague's offseason trade to the Indiana Pacers, Schroder became the starter.
Atlanta has little depth at point guard behind Schroder, which means Malcolm Delaney will likely shoulder the lion's share of the minutes Friday night.
Delaney is averaging 5.9 points and 2.7 assists per game this season.
Atlanta is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 32-24, but beating Miami without its offensive spark plug will be a major challenge, as the Heat are among the NBA's hottest teams with an 8-2 mark over their past 10 outings.
