B/R NFL 1000: Ranking the Top Running Backs for the 2026 Season

BR NFL Scouting Dept.Aug 4, 2026

This is the NFL 1000. The 1,000 best players in the league today, ranked by our NFL Scouting Department based on their on-field play and positional value.

Up next in the series: running back. Have the young stars caught up to the old guard? Who's No. 1 at the position?

To tackle those questions and more, our team of scouts conducted an exhaustive film review and graded every non-rookie on a 100-point scale built from position-specific traits.

Running backs are graded on five categories: vision/patience, elusiveness/contact balance (25 points apiece), receiving ability, athleticism (20 apiece) and pass protection (10). Trait scores add up to the grade, and when multiple players received the same score, their ranking was determined by a majority vote among the group.

Player grades and write-ups were done by Bleacher Report NFL scouts Damian Parson (QB/WR/RB/FB), Brandon Thorn (OL), Matt Holder (EDGE, LB, DL), Dan Harms (TE, CB, Safety) and Brent Sobleski (Kickers/Punters).

Sean Tucker and Trey Benson, both well-known to fantasy football managers, will need to make the most of opportunities, which may be few and far between with new faces in their respective backfields, to ascend these rankings in future years.

The largest group in these rankings has a good mix of steady and flashy. You know exactly what you get from the Whites, Perines, Allgeiers, and Johnsons of the world, and every team hopes to have players like that on the depth chart.

Rodriguez Jr., Croskey-Merritt and Marks could see more defined and/or expanded roles in 2026. The potential to rise the rankings could be there.

The stars of this group are actually overshadowed by the question marks. Can Tuten shine in an expanded role? Can the Broncos unlock RJ Harvey?

How will Irving, Skattebo, Allen and Hampton look after injuries last year? Will the Pats give Henderson more run? Can Corum build off his strong 2025?

This group will look very different a year from now.

What this group lacks in flash, they make up for in production.

The exception is Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 draft, who lands here for talent over production. An improved Raiders offense should help, and he has by far the most potential to rise significantly in future rankings.

Swift, Montgomery and Brown have good potential to move up, too.

This is a boom-or-bust group. Etienne and Walker join new offenses while Hall stayed with a work-in-progress offense.

Each rusher could post a huge season, but they could just as easily drop in future versions.

Production in spades, and you know exactly what you're getting from each of these rushers. But all three bring a bit of a bust-or-element due to expectations entering this season.

One way or another, expect movement from this group in future editions.

The offenses don't run without these players.

Injury history and age/mileage factor in for McCaffrey here, while the younger Gibbs's do-everything ability is reminiscent of CMC's overall game.

Meanwhile, there may be no better pure rusher in football than Jonathan Taylor.

But these three fall just a few points behind our No. 1 back.
