NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz on Jimmy Butler, Wilson Chandler and More

Paul KasabianFeb 21, 2017

While DeMarcus Cousins' move to New Orleans made seismic waves, there still lies a small amount of potential that another big transaction or two could be looming.

At the very least, we're bound to see some contending teams load up in hopes of unseating the odds-on favorites to make the NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Here's a look at four players who could be on the move this week.

Jimmy Butler

Will the Chicago Bulls trade their franchise player to a championship contender and rebuild?

As of now, it doesn't seem like a deal is close, but the deadline is still far enough away that something could materialize.

Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report reported that the Boston Celtics looked past acquiring Cousins in hopes of landing Butler.

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical also mentioned that Butler to the Celtics is a possibility (skip ahead to the 30-second mark):

Wojnarowski had this to say specifically: "[Chicago and Boston] have engaged in the potential of this trade. They haven't gotten far on it."

For his part, Butler doesn't seem too concerned. Here's what he told Sam Smith of bulls.com:

"

'I never know what tomorrow brings, so I’ll just lay down, dream and hopefully wake up the next day,' said a contemplative Butler looking forward to his shorter All-Star break. 'Am I anxious for (Thursday)? I don’t worry about that; I’ll be OK. Not saying I’m untradeable, but I don’t think about that. If I’m not in a Bulls uniform, I’ll give you (reporter) a hug and say goodbye to you. Hopefully I’m not going to die, but hopefully I’m not going to get traded, either. I won’t know. I don’t control that. Control what I can control, like going on vacation.'

"

Butler isn't likely going anywhere unless Celtics general manager Danny Ainge presses the panic button, which isn't something the level-headed executive does.

The price might be too steep for Butler, and it brings a considerable amount of uncertainty, as Zach Lowe of ESPN notes:

"

Dealing for Butler carries some risk if the Bulls gore Boston. Swap the 2017 Nets pick, Jaylen Brown, Smart, and at least one other non-Nets first-rounder, and you've tossed away a lot of your future to build a team that still might not be on Cleveland's level. LeBron is that good. What if you're left with a good team, but not a great one, as Horford approaches his mid-30s -- and Thomas demands a max contract?

"

The guess is that talks between Boston and Chicago continue through Thursday but that nothing gets done because the Celtics aren't willing to meet the Bulls' asking price.

On the flip side, versatile Denver Nuggets small forward Wilson Chandler is much more likely to be packing his bags in a few days.

Chris Haynes of ESPN eyes one Western Conference team as a possibility:

That would make a ton of sense. The Rockets already have a sixth man who provides scoring punch off the bench (shooting guard Eric Gordon, who averages 17.2 points per game), but no other Rocket reserve averages over nine points per game. Chandler could come off the bench with Gordon and provide the second unit with more scoring.

Wojnarowski connected Chandler with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers, though he wondered if either team had the assets to make the deal (skip ahead to 2:30).

He would be a fit on either team, slotting in at small forward for the Clippers or stretch power forward for the Thunder.

Darren Collison and Reggie Jackson

A pair of point guards could be on the move as well.

Darren Collison could be shipped out of Sacramento as part of a complete rebuild following the Cousins trade. Chris Mannix of The Vertical has the report: "Free agents-to-be Ben McLemore and Darren Collison are available, sources said, as is Arron Afflalo, a solid bench scorer with a manageable contract."

Collison would be a great addition to a team looking to add some backcourt depth for a stretch run. The Washington Wizards would be a great fit, as Collison could come off the bench and give John Wall a breather.

Every Wizards reserve currently averages fewer than seven points a game, so Collison would provide a big scoring boost to the second unit. No rumors exist connecting that player and team at the moment, but it's a potential landing spot.

Otherwise, the Reggie Jackson experiment seems to be running its course in Detroit. He averaged 17.6 points and 9.2 assists per game in 2015 after he was traded from Oklahoma City at the deadline, but his numbers have dipped since (15.2 points and 5.6 assists per game this year).

Jackson has averaged fewer than 26 minutes per game in February, losing time to backup Ish Smith at the point. Detroit is barely hanging onto the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference and needs to make some moves.

Marc Stein of ESPN reported that a deal involving Jackson moving to Orlando has been discussed:

Ultimately, it looks like Jackson's time in Detroit is up.
