Eagles, Carroll Talking Extension
Thursday, Dec. 29
Per Mark Eckel of NJ Advance Media, the Eagles have had "preliminary talks" with Carroll about a contract extension.
Carroll told Eckel he has "a new agent, so we'll see how it goes" with regard to his talks with the Eagles. He also noted he would like to return to Philadelphia but acknowledged the decision isn't all up to him.
The 29-year-old is in his seventh NFL season and third with the Eagles. He was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2010, emerging as a starter in 2012, and had his best year in 2013 with three interceptions and 12 passes defensed.
Carroll's 2015 season was cut short when he suffered a broken ankle in a game against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 26. His performance prior to getting injured was modest, with Pro Football Focus grading him out as the 53rd-best cornerback with an overall grade of minus-1.2.
After re-signing with the Eagles on a one-year deal prior to this season, Carroll has started all 15 games and has had quality performances against elite competition. He gave up just one catch to Odell Beckham Jr. on Nov. 6, per Pro Football Focus (h/t Josh Paunil of Philadelphia magazine).
The Eagles have had success on defense this season, entering Week 17 ranked sixth in opponent completion percentage (60.5) and 12th in points allowed (21.2).
Keeping that group largely intact for another year, along with further development by quarterback Carson Wentz, will give the Eagles plenty of reasons to be optimistic for a quick turnaround in 2017.
