Ryan Bass of CBS Tampa reported Buccaneers starting safety Chris Conte is not expected to play in Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers

Wright played for the Buccaneers from 2014 to 2015, appearing in 21 games with nine starts and recording 51 tackles along with five passes defensed.

The 28-year-old has yet to play this season after the Buccaneers cut him in August. His career started with the Chicago Bears in 2010 under head coach Lovie Smith. A third-round pick, he became a key contributor on the defense in his second season and started all 31 games he played from 2012 to 2013.

Wright followed Smith to Tampa Bay in 2014 before becoming expendable prior to this season as new head coach Dirk Koetter wanted to remake the roster in an image that would suit his style of play on offense and defense.

Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times noted Wright still has familiarity with the Bucs because current defensive backs coach Jon Hoke worked with the Bears when Wright was still with the team.

Tampa Bay's pass defense has been in the middle of the pack in the NFL this season. The Buccaneers rank 17th in passing yards allowed per game (253) and are tied for 19th in passing touchdowns allowed (20), per ESPN.com

The secondary also became an area of need after the Bucs' Week 12 win over the Seattle Seahawks when Conte suffered an undisclosed injury, per Auman.

Wright is not a difference-maker who will transform the Bucs into an elite pass-coverage unit, but he provides experienced depth with the ability to start if necessary for a team in the midst of chasing a playoff spot for the first time since 2007.
