Recap
Both Liverpool and Tottenham made plenty of changes to their starting XI entering the contest, clearly prioritising the Premier League, and the Reds' superior depth made the difference at Anfield.
Sturridge gave the hosts an early lead with a clever touch, as shared by the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:
A number of Liverpool's young starlets made a big impression, most notably Trent Alexander-Arnold, who might just be the most talented prospect to emerge from the academy in years. Spurs improved as the match wore on, however, and Tuesday's clash remained close until Sturridge struck again.
His second goal came courtesy of a clever run in behind the defence, allowing the England international a clear path through on goal.

Vincent Janssen pulled one back for the visitors with 14 minutes left to play, but the Reds clung on to their lead to book their spot in the round of eight.
Per Liverpool's official Twitter account, manager Jurgen Klopp thought his team could have done more with their chances:
Arsenal completely dominated Reading and were unlucky only to score twice on Tuesday, with Oxlade-Chamberlain bagging both goals. Like Klopp, manager Arsene Wenger decided to rotate his squad, but the Gunners' backups still handled their opponents rather easily.
ESPN FC's Mattias Karen was impressed by the team's depth:
The first half, in particular, was one-way traffic, which somehow only resulted in a single goal. Oxlade-Chamberlain was given far too much space inside the box, and the winger gladly took the gift, slotting home a great strike.
Reading improved after the break and even had two good chances to equalise before the Gunners increased the pace and secured the win with another goal.

Over in Newcastle, the Magpies ran riot against Preston North End, thanks in part to an early red card. Aleksandar Mitrovic had already given his side the lead when Alan Browne made the absurd decision to strike Jack Colback in the face during a duel.
Damian Spellman of the Press Association couldn't believe it:
The sending-off opened the floodgates, with Mitrovic grabbing a second goal and Mohamed Diame also bagging a brace. Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie completed the scoring.
Hull City and Leeds also booked their spot in the next round. Wednesday's slate of matches includes the next chapter in the rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City and Chelsea's crosstown trip to West Ham United.
