Manchester City vs. Southampton: Pep Guardiola's Key Pre-Match Presser

Christopher SimpsonOct 21, 2016

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said he will not be changing his philosophy after their 4-0 defeat to his former side Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was asked if he might change his style, and according to the Times' Paul Hirst, he replied:

Per Simon Bajkowski and Ciaran Kelly of the Manchester Evening News, he added: "I think about [changing] but after that the solution is not better than what I believe."

Guardiola also reflected on what went wrong at the Camp Nou and called for patience as he works to bring success to the Etihad Stadium, per City's official Twitter feed:

Per City's official website, he added: "There were many good things. John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan...it was the first time they have been to Barca. So we need time, last season we were the oldest team in the Premier League so we tried to change that, but we need time to learn."

Claudio Bravo was sent off during the match when an attempted pass out from the back went awry and he gave the ball to Luis Suarez—he was subsequently given a red card for stopping Suarez's resulting shot with his hands outside the area.

The Spaniard called for Bravo to respond to the mistake and also said he believed the Sky Blues were looking good before Fernandinho's slip handed Lionel Messi a golden opportunity to take the lead:

According to City's official website, he noted how difficult their task became upon Bravo's dismissal: "Last three or four times we’ve played with Barca, most of time we’ve played with 10 men. With 10 you cannot imagine how difficult it is."

The MEN's James Robson and ESPN's Jonathan Smith commented on the passion with which Pep spoke:

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero was controversially left on the bench for the game, and captain Vincent Kompany was absent from the squad entirely. Guardiola explained why and confirmed they both remain part of his plans:

Looking ahead to Sunday's clash with Southampton, Guardiola is anticipating a difficult game and gave the latest on Pablo Zabaleta's fitness:

The Sky Blues are now winless in four matches in all competitions, and they'll host a Saints side in good form—after a difficult start to the season, Claude Puel's team have picked up three wins in their last four Premier League games.

City remain top but almost certainly won't if they fail to win on Sunday having been caught by Arsenal, while Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Chelsea are close behind.

While the Citizens' form hasn't yet put them in crisis, it's important they emerge from their slump as soon as possible—they can't afford to drop more points.
