Edwin Jackson, Orioles Reportedly Agree to Minor League Contract

Tyler ConwayApr 5, 2017

Fresh off one of the worst years of his MLB career, Edwin Jackson could use a fresh start. He'll get just that with the Baltimore Orioles after agreeing to a minor league deal Wednesday, per the Baltimore Sun's Eduardo A. Encina

FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman confirmed the news.

Jackson, 33, split last season with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. He went 5-7 with a 5.89 ERA and 1.58 WHIP, struggling in his return to the rotation after spending 2015 in the bullpen.

The Marlins designated him for assignment after only eight appearances, and he spent a brief time in the minors with San Diego before coming back up in July. Jackson did not have a single month with an ERA below five with the Padres, likely only keeping his spot in the rotation because the Padres were well out of playoff contention.

"I had a few games that I'd like to erase," Jackson said, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. "But it's how you bounce back from them. So I definitely think I showed a resilience—the drive in me to bounce back from a terrible start. Of course, you like to be more consistent."

It's unclear where Jackson fits in for the Orioles. In 2015, he found surprising success as a reliever with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. He posted a 4-3 record with a 3.07 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, seemingly settling down after years of inconsistencies as a starter.

While Jackson could hop in with designs on starting, it may be best at this point that he misses out on that job and finds success as a middle-inning relief guy. At age 33, he's not going to find the consistency and success that once made him one of the best prospects in the Dodgers organization.

But Jackson still has good enough stuff to remain in the majors in some capacity.
