WWE Hell in a Cell 2016: Predicting Match Card, Most Likely Swerves at PPV
The marquee matches and clashes inside the cage are set for WWE Hell in a Cell 2016, but the midcard remains incomplete.
Enzo Amore, Bayley and Sami Zayn, Superstars who are all in need of direction and momentum, are poised to join the Oct. 30 pay-per-view. Attacks on recent editions of Raw have provided hints as to where these warriors are headed next.
Hell in a Cell currently has five bouts on the docket, as listed on WWE.com:
- T.J. Perkins vs. Brian Kendrick (Cruiserweight Championship)
- Roman Reigns vs. Rusev (United States Championship, Hell in a Cell)
- The New Day vs. Cesaro and Sheamus (Raw Tag Team Championships)
- Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins (Universal Championship, Hell in a Cell)
- Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte (Raw Women's Championship, Hell in a Cell)
Amore is set to join that list, courtesy of a burgeoning rivalry with The Club.
What else will the PPV offer? Which surprises will be the talk of the Raw-exclusive show?
Let's dig into WWE's foreshadowing, obvious or otherwise, and predict the rest of the Hell in a Cell card.
Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson
1 of 5Two teams in need of fresh foes collided on Monday's Raw.
Enzo Amore and Big Cass didn't even have time to fire off their signature catchphrases. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson ambushed the popular pair, throttling them without explanation.
This rivalry was inevitable.
As Jason Powell of ProWrestling.net wrote, "It was only a matter of time before they went to this program. Anderson and Gallows were beaten by New Day repeatedly, so it's time for them to work with the only other babyface team that matters on the Raw roster."
Gallows and Anderson's attack is sure to lead to retribution. The animosity will pick up in a hurry, and soon, two squads searching for momentum will meet at Hell in a Cell.
Which team will WWE catapult, and which will serve as the other's stepping stone?
Braun Strowman vs. Sami Zayn
2 of 5Braun Strowman has grown tired of beating on no-name opponents.
A few weeks back, he demanded that Raw general manager Mick Foley give him better competition. Foley tried to do that by pitting him against two enhancement talents at the same time, but Strowman gobbled up both men with ease.
As Strowman grows angrier and threatens to issue destruction on the WWE world, a daring babyface will eventually stand up to him. Chances are that Sami Zayn will play that role.
Zayn has been spinning his wheels since knocking off Kevin Owens at Battleground. Trying to slow down this monstrous man will give him something to do for a short while. And Strowman can continue his dominance by flattening the underdog.
Zayn devotees won't like him being used as a victim, but Strowman's story requires him to trample several fan favorites.
Dana Brooke vs. Bayley
3 of 5While Sasha Banks and Charlotte clash inside Hell in a Cell, their allies will have issues of their own to deal with at the PPV.
Charlotte's protege, Dana Brooke, and Banks' friend, Bayley, are set to branch off from the champion and challenger, respectively. As Alasdair Wilkins of the A.V. Club wrote, "Dana Brooke appears to be spinning off into a separate feud with Bayley."
That began with a backstage altercation between the two before Banks reclaimed the Women's Championship from Charlotte. Bayley clobbered Brooke, snapping after the bully put her hands on her.
The payback arrived soon after. On Monday's Raw, Brooke attacked Bayley, leaving her lying among a heap of deflated tube men.
It's easy to imagine this bad blood leading to a battle at the PPV.
Raw's only other brand-exclusive event since the draft (Clash of Champions) featured two women's matches. That pattern should repeat itself at Hell in a Cell.
Cesaro Turns Heel
4 of 5Cesaro and Sheamus have bickered with each other ever since Mick Foley forced them into an alliance.
The expectation during their title match with The New Day is for them to continue to argue, to have the worst tag team chemistry. But with the chance at claiming gold in front of him, Cesaro may grow more like Sheamus, embracing his vicious side.
The story of mismatched teams managing to win despite their differences is one WWE has told several times over. Team Hell No and The Rock 'n' Sock Connection starred in memorable examples of that tale.
WWE could tease a repeat of that narrative, only to have The King of Swing realize that he and Sheamus have plenty in common. This would set up a new angle for Cesaro following the Hell in a Cell tag title match, opening the door for him and Sheamus to dominate the division.
A mid-match heel turn would make it easier to root against Cesaro if he took on the popular New Day, too.
Triple H Arrives
5 of 5Triple H will eventually charge back into the feud between Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens. The story is incomplete without his return.
The Game gifted Owens the Universal Championship in August by attacking former right-hand man Rollins. Owens has since claimed he didn't know about Triple H's ambush in advance. Rollins has been furious as he searches for answers.
But the rivalry has rolled on without Triple H's presence.
WWE has to reinsert him in order to clear up the situation and move this narrative along. Hell in a Cell is an apt time to do just that. The format's lack of rules would allow Triple H to hand Owens a weapon or step inside the cage to beat on Rollins.
Hell in a Cell promises to welcome The Game and further enrage Rollins.
