Tottenham Transfer News: Latest Heung-min Son and Leo Da Silva Lopes Rumours

James DudkoOct 12, 2016

Mauricio Pochettino reportedly vetoed a potential transfer worth €32 million that would have sent South Korean forward Heung-min Son to Bundesliga club Wolfsburg. The Tottenham Hotspur manager has since been rewarded by Son's exceptional form to start this season.

German publication SportBild (h/t Sport Witness) revealed Pochettino had "no interest in selling the South Korean international."

The same report also revealed how Wolfsburg were even keen to revisit a possible deal, something scuppered by Son's subsequent revival at Spurs: "The Bundesliga club had hoped Son would be a bit part player until the January transfer window, at which point they could again dangle the bid in front of Tottenham, but that plan has now completely gone out of the window."

Things have indeed turned for the better for Son at Tottenham. He's become a prolific match-winner, leading the line brilliantly in Harry Kane's absence.

After he netted the winner away to CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League, WhoScored.com detailed how effective Son has been in front of goal:

Son has turned things around at Spurs, something for which he's already credited Pochettino.

Last month, the attacker revealed how his future was uncertain while representing his nation at this summer's 2016 Rio Olympics, but he's now delighted he got to stay, per Luke Edwards, of the Daily Telegraph: "I am staying here and I am very happy I am staying. I like playing for Tottenham and I like scoring goals."

But things weren't always this way. Earlier in September, Tom Collomosse of the London Evening Standard reported how Son had doubts about his Tottenham career, despite Pochettino turning down Wolfsburg's £25.5 million offer.

It's worked out well for Spurs, since Son has now become an indispensable part of the forward line. In fact, he adds more perceptive movement, artful passing and natural flair to a side that can be a little too pragmatic at times.

Still, the challenge to integrate Son's out-of-nothing inspiration without breaking down the structure of his disciplined team remains a tricky one for Pochettino. At least it will be once Kane returns to action.

Yet there still has to be a place in the starting XI for Son, even with Tottenham's free-scoring No. 10 back through the middle. The former's been playing so well, he's starting to make the £22 million Spurs paid Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 look like a true bargain.

Tottenham Lead the Competition for Peterborough Gem

Speaking of a bargain, Pochettino could be set to steal one ahead of a host of Premier League rivals if he lands Peterborough's teenage sensation Leo Da Silva Lopes.

Fortunately, Spurs are reportedly at the front of a queue also featuring Liverpool, Southampton and north London rivals Arsenal for the 17-year-old League One talent, per the Sun's Darren Witcoop.

He reported how Spurs had scouts at Peterborough's last game to run the rule over the exciting winger. He also quoted Posh boss Grant McCann extolling the virtues of his precocious, breakthrough ace: "He's strong, athletic and he carries the ball very well."

Of course, the obvious comparisons here involve Tottenham's success with Dele Alli. Signed from MK Dons for a mere £5 million in early 2015, Alli emerged last season as the young fulcrum of Pochettino's hard-working and dynamic team.

Alli's eye for goal and creative acumen have made him arguably Spurs' most influential player. His continued success rates as a worthy reward for Tottenham's bravery in not only recruiting young talent but giving it a chance in the pressure cooker of England's top flight.

Yet it's worth pointing out not every youthful prospect Pochettino signs will match Alli's rise. Expectations still need to be realistic for those youngsters given their chance.

Still, signing young gems and turning them into stars is the only way for Spurs to stay competitive among the big-spending giants of the Premier League.

Building through youth, along with spending wisely on shrewd signings like Son, have served Tottenham and Pochettino superbly so far.
