Les Miles Discusses Firing from LSU in ESPN 'College GameDay' Interview
The LSU Tigers fired Les Miles following an 18-13 loss to the Auburn Tigers that was the result of the team's inability to get a snap off with one second remaining in regulation. But he told ESPN's College GameDay on Saturday that he has no regrets about the way things played out.
"If I had to have one play that define who I am, I take that one," Miles told ESPN's Tom Rinaldi (via AL.com's Cheryl Wray). "There was nothing left, and our team took the snap without instruction, rolled to its right...and fired a ball in the end zone that wins the game."
Although the Tigers appeared to escape with a dramatic win following a touchdown pass as time expired, officials deemed that the game clock hit zero before the snap occurred.
"If that play is allowed, we win the game," he added. "I'll take the play. I'll take the very last play. That would be the one."
And while Miles boasted a record of 114-34—good for a .770 winning percentage—at LSU, he admitted the program was looking for a boost following a 2-2 start.
"I'm certain they wanted more production," he told College GameDay (via the Advocate). "More wins. I understand."
Miles admitted that watching the Tigers from afar will be difficult after he led the team for 11-plus seasons.
"This Saturday will be a difficult thing to me," he said, per the Advocate's Ross Dellenger. "May be in the backyard, walk around, make calls, sweat."
As for LSU, the Tigers will look for more consistency under interim head coach Ed Orgeron when they square off against the Missouri Tigers (2-2) on Saturday night.
Now four games into the season, LSU has topped 30 points just once. With Missouri's 26th-ranked scoring defense (18.8 points per game) on deck, the Tigers will need to shed their inconsistencies and try to turn the corner as they embark on a new era.
