B/R Recruiting Breakdown: Michigan QB Commit Dylan McCaffrey

Tyler DonohueOct 5, 2016

Each week, Bleacher Report National Recruiting Analyst Tyler Donohue analyzes a different prospect based on in-person evaluation and intensive film study. Here's our latest scouting report of a promising young athlete and how he projects as a college player.

Family lineage and elevated football intelligence make Dylan McCaffrey one of the country's most compelling quarterback prospects. A Michigan Wolverines commit since last winter, he is viewed as a potential star pupil under the direction of former NFL signal-caller Jim Harbaugh.

The Colorado standout carried scholarship offers from Arizona State, LSU, Nebraska, Washington, UCLA and several other universities before announcing intentions to attend school in Ann Arbor. McCaffrey is considered the top-rated pledge in Michigan's 2017 recruiting class.

His father, former NFL receiver Ed McCaffrey, won three Super Bowl titles during a professional career that featured three 1,000-yard seasons. Older brother Christian was a Heisman Trophy finalist for the Stanford Cardinal last year after breaking Barry Sanders' collegiate single-season all-purpose yardage record.

It didn't take long for Dylan to command a spotlight of his own, breaking out with 2,378 passing yards and 29 total touchdowns as a sophomore at Valor Christian High School. He's racked up 6,147 yards, 58 scores and 14 interceptions through the air since 2014, per MaxPreps, and earned an invitation to the Elite 11 Finals this summer.

His latest effort included 336 passing yards and four touchdowns Thursday during a pivotal 42-26 victory over fellow Colorado heavyweight Cherry Creek High School. McCaffrey connected on 20 of 31 attempts in the contest, pushing his completion percentage this season to 64 percent.

We continue our weekly review of college football's most coveted prospects with a closer look at the latest McCaffrey to cause fits for defenses.

The Basics

High School: Valor Christian (Littleton, Colorado)

Size: 6'4 ½", 195 lbs

Recruitment Status: Committed to Michigan on Feb. 15, 2016

Prospect Assessment

  • Mentally prepared to encounter what awaits at the collegiate level. Embraces behind-the-scenes work that quarterbacks must often handle on their own.
  • From a family of accomplished football players. Can consult older brother on how to handle the "celebrity" that accompanies success, as few college players are more widely recognized than Christian McCaffrey.
  • An expanded physical frame is an important part of development to monitor moving forward; entered senior season under 200 pounds at nearly 6'5".
  • Elite 11 coaches expressed optimism McCaffrey could eventually settle in near the 230-pound range. Would make him sturdier while dealing with defenders behind center and more imposing as a runner.
  • Impressive overall athlete who is capable of inflicting damage beyond the pocket. He's gained 1,429 yards (4.7 per carry) on the ground with 30 rushing touchdowns as a prep player.
  • Additional weight will increase power, but velocity is already above average; McCaffrey can zip passes into tight windows with confidence.
  • His accuracy is probably a better attribute than power at this point. He does excellent work with ball placement, particularly when targeting receivers toward boundaries.
  • Displays impeccable posture while situated in the pocket and maintains desired center of gravity, even when forced to scramble; shoulders stay square, and eyes stay active.
  • Impressive mental aptitude in terms of digesting a complicated playbook; excelled in this facet at the Elite 11 Finals.
  • A competitive athlete who commands his offensive huddle with authority. Selected by Elite 11 counselors as finalist with the strongest leadership attributes.
  • Mental intangibles and potential for physical growth create high-ceiling projection. Elite 11 coach Yogi Roth: "This guy has all the things we don't see to give himself an opportunity in the Big Ten to shine and have a chance to be the No. 1 pick."

We referenced McCaffrey's penchant for placing the ball in an area where only his intended target has an opportunity to gain possession. This has been a key factor for him throughout high school, as he is intercepted just once every 53 pass attempts on average.

McCaffrey is especially effective inside the red zone, where he likes to throw toward boundaries in an effort to prevent potentially catastrophic turnovers.

For example, he sets up shop here at the 3-yard line in a two-receiver set that implements a pair of running backs who momentarily draw linebackers toward the line of scrimmage. Sensing solo coverage to his left, McCaffrey doesn't hesitate, sending a high-placed pass toward the sideline within two seconds of the snap:

This toss is destined to either hit his teammate's hands or sail out of bounds. The receiver uses a sharp inside move before bursting toward the perimeter, gaining wiggle room from his defender in the process.

Now allotted space to go airborne, the pass target does his job by securing a precise dart up top:

Turnover avoidance is essential for sustained success at any level of football. An offense should be able to keep ill-advised interceptions to a minimum with McCaffrey operating the aerial attack, and he provided further evidence at The Opening in July by carving up star-studded defenses with exemplary touch on a variety of downfield attempts.

This previous clip served as an example of how effective McCaffrey can deliver quick-timed dimes from the pocket, but he may be even more impressive when improvisation is required.

The next stage of our film study focuses on his ability to escape pressure without sacrificing fundamentals, which makes life difficult for over-stretched defensive secondaries. Here, McCaffrey recognizes a six-man rush just before the ball is snapped:

Protected by five offensive linemen and a blocking back, McCaffrey has a moment to assess the situation before three defenders—two off the edge—swarm six yards deep into the backfield. Never losing sight of downfield progression, he locates an escape hatch, briefly lowers his shoulders while stepping up two yards in the pocket and navigates toward his right:

McCaffrey comes up for air in the clear, suddenly presented with room to run for a first down. Instead, he recognizes a lapse in deep pass coverage as a result of the defensive front's inability to bring him down on a blitz and fires a laser while moving toward his throwing arm:

The result is a 33-yard touchdown, and it's the kind of play that rips the heart out of a defense.

Long-Term Outlook

Expectations will continue to grow for Michigan's offense as Harbaugh assembles a hand-picked supporting cast and mentors young passers. McCaffrey is likely to become one of two former top-10 quarterback recruits with four years of eligibility remaining on Michigan's roster when he joins 2015 U.S. Army All-American Player of the Year finalist Brandon Peters next year.

Both may require patience in pursuit of starting reps, and this duo could engage in a high-profile competition for those duties. It's the exact environment Harbaugh envisioned when he began targeting these two to join his quarterback room.

Physical progression should prove vital for McCaffrey, who already presents the playbook diligence and mental fortitude coaches covet. His personality, athleticism and smarts suggest he'll be ready to follow family footsteps toward stardom when opportunities arrive in Ann Arbor.
