Naomi vs. Alexa Bliss: Winner and Reaction from WWE No Mercy 2016

Mike ChiariOct 9, 2016

Naomi picked up a big win over Alexa Bliss at No Mercy on Sunday night after replacing an injured Becky Lynch.

Lynch was originally scheduled to defend her SmackDown Women's Championship against Bliss. However, SmackDown Live commissioner Shane McMahon announced she wasn't healthy enough to perform, courtesy of WWE's official Twitter account.

That opened the door for Naomi to have a pay-per-view opportunity, and she delivered after reversing an armbar by Bliss into a pin and getting the three-count. Bliss looked shocked with the result, courtesy of WWE Universe:

Vaughn Johnson of Philly.com had conflicting feelings about the match:

It will be interesting to see how Naomi is inserted into Bliss' current feud with Lynch.

WWE general manager Daniel Bryan announced Sunday that Bliss will wrestle Lynch on Nov. 8 for the women's title, courtesy of WWE:

On Sept. 11, Backlash crowned the first-ever SmackDown women's champion as part of a Six-Pack Challenge involving Becky, Alexa, Nikki Bella, Carmella, Naomi and Natalya. The bout came down to Lynch and Carmella, and it was the Irish Lass Kicker who finally reached the pinnacle of women's wrestling in WWE.

Becky entered Backlash as the favorite since she was the top woman selected by SmackDown in the brand-split draft, and she didn't allow the pressure to get to her.

She also made it clear she intended to have the same mindset that she possessed even before winning the SmackDown Women's Championship:

While Lynch was called up to the main roster last year along with Charlotte and Sasha Banks, she spent a lot of time in NXT and was an in-ring veteran before she ever signed with WWE.

Bliss, on the other hand, was called up as part of the brand split and has only been wrestling since signing a WWE developmental contract in 2013, which put her at a huge disadvantage Sunday in terms of experience.

Despite that, the Columbus, Ohio, native was confident in how she matched up with Becky entering No Mercy, according to WWE Network on Twitter:

Bliss defeated Nikki, Carmella, Naomi and Natalya in a Fatal Five-Way on SmackDown for the right to face Lynch for the title, and she had plenty of momentum on her side entering Sunday night.

That's what makes her loss at No Mercy, which cost Bliss some of the momentum she built in recent weeks, all the more confounding. While Bliss had little time to prepare to face Naomi, having the No. 1 contender fall on a PPV rarely makes the challenger look stronger.

Perhaps WWE wants to have Bliss and Naomi go back and forth until Lynch is healthy enough to wrestle again. Feuding with Naomi could be a nice diversion for Bliss as long as she winds up looking like a worthy contender for the women's championship again when November rolls around.
