Toni Kroos, Real Madrid Agree New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Rory MarsdenOct 12, 2016

Toni Kroos has agreed a new two-year contract extension with Real Madrid that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2022.

The German pass-master's previous contract was set to run until 2020, but he has been rewarded for his consistent excellence with an extended deal.

News that Kroos, 26, had put pen to paper was confirmed by Madrid and translated by Sport:

Real's official statement read: "Real Madrid and Toni Kroos have come to an agreement on a contract extension which will see the player linked to the club until June 30, 2022. Toni Kroos will speak to the media tomorrow in the press room of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium."

Per Jose Felix Diaz of Marca, manager Pep Guardiola reportedly attempted to bring Kroos to Manchester City in the summer, but Real have now secured his services for the foreseeable future.

As noted by sports journalist Robbie Dunne, Kroos' new deal should prevent big clubs coming after him again next summer:

Kroos has become a central figure in manager Zinedine Zidane's Real side, appearing in 32 La Liga matches last season—providing 10 assists—and playing in 12 of Los Blancos' 13 matches as they won the UEFA Champions League, per WhoScored.com.

Alongside central-midfield partner Luka Modric, Kroos runs the Real midfield and is a key architect of their attacks, per WhoScored.com:

He has made a successful start to the 2016-17 campaign as well, already matching his goal tally in La Liga from last season, per Squawka:

After moving from Bayern Munich to the Bernabeu in 2014 for £24 million, it took Kroos a little time to settle in at the Madrid giants.

But he is now, quite rightly, one of the first names on the teamsheet and a key part of Zidane's system.

His continued presence at Real can only be positive news for the club as they go in search of domestic and European glory in 2016-17.
