Former Stanford Swimmer Brock Turner Released from Prison After Serving 3 Months

Adam WellsSep 2, 2016

Former Stanford Cardinal swimmer Brock Turner was released from prison Friday after serving three months of a six-month sentence following his conviction of sexually assaulting a woman on campus.

Per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com), Turner's early release was the result of good behavior.

Turner was arrested Jan. 18 after two male students discovered him on top of an unconscious woman.

In a Jan. 28 police report, Turner admitted to having sexual contact with the victim but denied that it wasn't consensual.

The case gained greater national attention when Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to just six months in prison after a jury found him guilty on three felony counts: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

Per the AP, approximately 200 people outside the Santa Clara County Jail were calling for Persky to resign from his post following Turner's release Friday. Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith told reporters Turner "should be in prison right now, but he's not in our custody."

As part of his conviction, Turner will be required to register as a sex offender every three months, and sheriff deputies will check in on him without warning to make sure he has not moved out of his parents' house in Dayton, Ohio, without proper permission from the authorities, per the AP.
