Draymond Green Reaches Plea Agreement in Assault Case
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green officially signed a plea agreement Friday after previously being charged with misdemeanor assault and battery for a July 10 incident.
The Detroit Free Press reported terms of the deal include a $560 fine, no criminal offenses and no contact with the victim for one year. The charge could then become a civil infraction.
Halston Herrera of Click On Detroit confirmed the details.
"I'm happy that this is behind me, and it's definitely a lesson learned," Green said, per Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. "I'm looking forward to competing for a gold medal for my country."
Brendan F. Quinn of MLive.com noted Green was originally arrested around 2:30 a.m. on July 10 after Michigan State football player Jermaine Edmondson, who's since left the program, identified him as the person who slapped him outside an East Lansing, Michigan, restaurant.
The NBA player could have faced maximum penalties of a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail before reaching the plea deal, according to the MLive.com report.
Police told ESPN: "It was basically an altercation between two guys. There's no injuries."
Green, 26, was one of 12 players selected to represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next month. Vince Ellis of USA Today passed along comments from the forward after he apologized during a team meeting over the weekend.
"Everybody's concerned," Green said. "At the end of the day, as a public figure as a guy who's representing this country, I said it's bigger than me. It's bigger than anybody on this team."
He added: "All you can do in life is learn and move on and don't make the same mistakes twice."
News of the plea agreement comes on the same day USA Basketball is scheduled to begin its exhibition slate leading up to the Olympics. The Americans will take on Argentina on Friday night in one of their toughest tests before the Games.
On an individual level, Green is expected to take on an important role for Team USA in the coming weeks given the absence of several high-profile players, including Warriors teammate Stephen Curry and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.
