New Events

The International Olympic Committee has proposed to add five new events to the Tokyo Games: Karate, skateboarding, sports climbing, surfing and baseball/softball. Those sports will be voted on when the IOC meets in August in Rio de Janeiro, and the event program will be finalized in 2017.

As of now, 28 sports are set for inclusion in Tokyo. With uncertainty as to the full list of events, however, a comprehensive schedule will be unveiled closer to the 2020 Games.

Venues

All of the Olympic venues will be held in two zones: The Heritage Zone and the Tokyo Bay Zone, with the Olympic Village to be placed between them.

A total of 34 venues will be used to host the Games, not including the Olympic Village and the IBC/MPC Tokyo International Exhibition Centre.

A map of the zones and venues can be found here.

Japan as Olympic Host

Japan has hosted three Olympics in its past: the 1964 Tokyo Summer Games, the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games and the 1998 Nagano Winter Games.

The 1964 Olympics were the first to ever be hosted in Asia and were memorable for a number of reasons. Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila became the first athlete to earn a second gold medal in the marathon, while Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina increased her career medal count to 18 in Tokyo. Women's volleyball was also introduced to the Olympics.

In SapporoYukio Kasaya became the first Japanese man to ever win a gold medal in the Winter Games in the normal hill ski-jumping event. Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi won silver and bronze, respectively, to give the country its first-ever clean sweep on the podium.

Finally, the 1998 Nagano Games saw the debut of snowboarding as an Olympic sport and the return of curling. The ice hockey tournament was also opened to all professionals, with the top players from the NHL joining the fray for the first time.

Women's ice hockey was also introduced to the Olympics in 1998.

And United States figure skater Tara Lipinski became the youngest individual champion in Winter Games history at just 15.
