Luc Mbah a Moute, Clippers Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction
Free-agent forward Luc Mbah a Moute signed a two-year contract to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers, the team announced on Friday.
On July 4, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported an agreement was in place, indicating Mbah a Moute's deal is worth $4.5 million. Wojnarowski added the deal includes a player option and is a result of the Clippers exercising their biannual exception.
Mbah a Moute appeared in 75 games last season, averaging 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 17.0 minutes per contest. The 29-year-old has been a steady starter throughout his NBA career, but he has bounced around to four different teams in the past three seasons after playing for the Milwaukee Bucks for five years.
The Clippers also retained reigning Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford, per the USA Today's Sam Amick, and Austin Rivers, per Wojnarowski, this offseason.
Those guards provide offense off the bench, but L.A. needed a versatile defender like Mbah a Moute—and it was able to re-sign him at a relative bargain.
Clips Nation's Lucas Hann provided further specifics on Mbah a Moute's contract:
"Luc Richard Mbah a Moute's contract will be the Bi-Annual Exception. $2.2M first year, player option for $2.3M 2nd year (@WojVerticalNBA)
— Lucas Hann (@LucasJHann) July 4, 2016"
Although he'll never produce eye-popping numbers on a Clippers squad that features stars like Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, Mbah a Moute is key to the team's defense.
He can compensate in that area for the aging Paul Pierce, and he can guard out to the perimeter, which is key to offset the preponderance of stretch 4s emerging in the NBA.
The increase in the salary cap could've led Los Angeles to overpay for Mbah a Moute. Instead, it capitalized on a salary-cap provision that amounted to a fair contract and gave both parties flexibility for the future beyond the 2016-17 season.
