Darrell Arthur Reportedly to Sign with Nuggets: Contract Details, Reaction
The Denver Nuggets have agreed to a three-year deal with forward Darrell Arthur, Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post reported Friday.
The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski later confirmed Dempsey's report and added that the deal is worth $23 million, which is a solid pay raise for Arthur.
According to Spotrac, he had never made more than $3.5 million in a single season. Now, he'll make an average of $7.7 million over the next three years.
A seven-year veteran, Arthur has been with the Nuggets for the past three seasons, providing relief minutes off the bench at both small forward and power forward.
Last season, the team expected to utilize him at the 4 behind Kenneth Faried because of the abundance of small forwards on Denver's roster, but an injury that sidelined Danilo Gallinari for 29 games forced Arthur to split duties again.
It was one of his best seasons in the league, though, as he averaged 7.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists while playing a career-high 21.7 minutes per game. On top of that, he shot a career-best 38.5 percent from three-point range.
The improvement in long-range shooting also opened up new avenues to score:
That kind of output had the Nuggets "focusing their initial attention" on bringing Arthur back, per Dempsey.
Arthur should be able to continue contributing as a role player while the Nuggets attempt to rebuild their roster. If Gallinari is able to stay healthy alongside Faried in the frontcourt while Denver's young backcourt of Emmanuel Mudiay and Jamal Murray develops, Arthur's minutes could become more significant as the Nuggets look to contend for a playoff berth in the Western Conference.
