4 Players Borussia Dortmund Should Target from Euro 2016

Clark WhitneyJul 1, 2016

Borussia Dortmund have had an extremely active summer transfer window thus far, and by the looks of it, they aren't done with their dealings just yet.

Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan have signed with Bayern Munich and Manchester City, respectively, and they probably won't be the last to leave the Signal-Iduna Park this summer.

On the other hand, BVB have added reinforcements in the form of Ousmane Dembele, Sebastian Rode, Raphael Guerreiro, Emre Mor, Marc Bartra, Mikel Merino and returning loanee Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Yet despite all the many signings, Dortmund are probably not done bringing in new players. They've been linked to many stars as of late, with Euro 2016 proving to be a good chance to do scouting and see potential additions on display.

Bleacher Report has taken a look at the players on show at the Euros and picked out four players who could bring something to the table at Dortmund.

Click "Begin Slideshow" for our picks, arranged in alphabetical order, by surname.

Julian Draxler

1 of 4

Julian Draxler looks to be a "sleeping giant," a player who has the potential to be world class but hasn't realized it just yet. But he could be on the cusp of greatness.

The 22-year-old was huge for Wolfsburg in the biggest games last season and was man of the match for Germany in their recent round-of-16 win over Slovakia.

With all things considered, Draxler could be a perfect replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is set to join Manchester United following BVB's announcement of a deal on their official Twitter account.

He has a range of skills, proving capable of playing anywhere in attack and of scoring and creating play himself. There might be some risk involved in signing a player as inconsistent as Draxler has been, but the 22-year-old has enormous upside and could reach his next level under Tuchel.

Mario Gotze

2 of 4

It would be ironic if, three years after Mkhitaryan was purchased to replace Gotze at Dortmund, the Ruhr side in turn signed Gotze to serve as a replacement for Mkhitaryan. Yet for all the irony, it might be a decent bit of business for BVB.

Like Draxler, Gotze hasn't yet realized his potential. But the talent is there, in abundance—after all, he assisted 15 goals in the Bundesliga as an 18-year-old.

Gotze could be a world-beater, and he offers the same kind of unpredictability that Mkhitaryan has: He can serve as the setup man or the scorer, although he needs to work on his shooting from distance and play in wide areas.

He hasn't shown his quality at Euro 2016, and it's been three years since he really impressed. But Gotze is another example of a player from the Euros that Dortmund could do with signing, especially if Mkhitaryan goes.

Fabian Schar

3 of 4

Dortmund may have already signed Marc Bartra to fill one of the center back positions, but another interior defender may be needed.

Mats Hummels has already signed for Bayern Munich, and Neven Subotic recently announced on his Facebook page (in German) that he intends to follow the Germany international in leaving the Signal-Iduna Park this summer.

BVB could therefore use another center back, and a good option would be Fabian Schar. The Switzerland international hasn't exactly lived up to his billing during his time at Hoffenheim, but he is nonetheless a top talent.

He showed as much during his time at Basel and played very well for his country during the Euros. His goal lifted the Swiss to a 1-0 victory over Albania in their Group A opener, and Switzerland only conceded twice in four games during the tournament before losing to Poland in a penalty shootout.

Still just 24 years of age, Schar still has room for development. And Tuchel may well be the right man to finally bring out his best qualities.

Andre Schurrle

4 of 4

Among Wolfsburg players, Draxler would be an appropriate replacement for Mkhitaryan. But Andre Schurrle would still be a great addition, albeit for different reasons.

It's not that he's lit the Euros up, but the former Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea man is at the tournament for a reason. Despite having a poor season at Wolfsburg, Joachim Low called him up to the Germany team remembering the key role he played in Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph.

Tuchel seems to have similar regard for Schurrle, whom he brought into the Bundesliga during his time at Mainz. Dortmund could use versatile forwards who can score, and with Marco Reus injury-prone, Schurrle would help fill the void.

Schurrle is an excellent option in counterattacking situations, he is armed with pace, good ball-control and deadly shooting technique.

Signing Schurrle would mean fewer minutes for the likes of youngsters Emre Mor and Christian Pulisic, but given all the quality Dortmund have lost from their starting lineup, perhaps it would be safest for Tuchel to cast his net wide and plan to have a few younger and more senior options in his squad.
