Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Signings Linked to Gunners Before Summer

Gianni VerschuerenJun 12, 2016

Arsenal will reportedly turn to Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani if Leicester City star Jamie Vardy doesn't join the club during the summer transfer window, while the latest rumours link Napoli full-back Elseid Hysaj to the Gunners.

According to the Daily Express (h/t Daily Star's Luke Gardener), Cavani has rejected wages of up to £500,000 per week to move to the Chinese Super League, as he's ready to make the move to the Premier League instead.

Manager Arsene Wenger is still waiting for Vardy to make a decision on his future, but if the Premier League's top revelation of last year stays with the Foxes, the Uruguay international would become the manager's top target.

Cavani is a divisive figure among fans and pundits alike. The 29-year-old was one of Europe's hottest strikers when he moved to the French capital from Napoli in 2013, but he was quickly pushed into a wide role with PSG, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the club's main striker.

The move seemed to dent his confidence, and he's yet to recover. Despite his excellent scoring record―19 goals in Ligue 1 this season, via WhoScored.com―he's now mainly known for missing key chances. The 2016 Copa America Centenario was another example, as Uruguay, led by the PSG man, disappointed tremendously.

Per Ives Galarcep of Goal, he didn't make any excuses:

El Matador was phenomenal during his time with the Partenopei, and a change of scenery could be all he needs to rediscover his old form. But it might take a major investment to convince PSG to sell, and given Cavani's recent failings, that's a big risk to take.

PSG will be losing Ibrahimovic, and Cavani is expected to become the club's top striker. Youngster Jean-Kevin Augustin has a lot of talent, but he's still raw and won't be asked to lead one of Europe's top outfits. With few options available on the transfer market, Les Parisiens would rather not part with Cavani at this time.

Here's a look at some of Cavani's top moments for PSG:

As a high-priced veteran with some concerns, he hardly fits what Arsenal generally look for in a player. It's easy to see why Wenger would prefer Vardy at this time―the England international is a proven performer in the Premier League and won't be nearly as expensive.

Gunners legend Thierry Henry was not impressed with the striker's decision to let Arsenal wait for now, per Bleacher Report UK:

Meanwhile, the Daily Star's Harry Pratt reported Wenger is preparing a £15 million offer for Napoli star Hysaj, one of the breakout performers of the 2015-16 Serie A campaign.

The Albania international mainly plays as a right-back but has the versatility to play on the left as well, and he even played at centre-back for Albania during the 1-0 loss against Switzerland in their UEFA Euro 2016 opener.

Hysaj put together a good performance against the Swiss, drawing praise from Bleacher Report's Lars Pollmann:

Scouted Football also liked what it saw:

The 22-year-old was a key figure for Napoli during the 2015-16 campaign, starting the bulk of their matches at right-back and replacing the equally impressive Faouzi Ghoulam on the left on a few occasions. Per Pratt, Barcelona have also taken note and would love to add the speedster to the squad to replace the departing Dani Alves.

Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked, although the report stated their lack of UEFA Champions League football means they're less likely to land the rising star.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

Hysaj could slide into Arsenal's starting XI as a left-back immediately or be used as a versatile depth option. Given his young age and tremendous upside, he would make for a great understudy to Hector Bellerin, who could return to former club Barcelona in the near future, per Pratt.
